KB,
I understand, from Gnomon, that you (you are King Bomba?) live in the appropriate country for my question... I've also left this question for Beatrice. Hopefully one of you will reply in time for Ben to make a change, if appropriate.
The file is at

My question refers to the 3rd last para:
>>
Debate continues over the use of the site of the former Maze/Long Kesh prison, with much opposition to redevelopment projects coming from Unionists, who fear it will become a shrine to Sands and the other hunger strikers.

From my perspective, I imagine that Unionists would be happy to redevelop & sweep it all under the carpet, while the Republicans would want to keep it there.
Am I right or wrong? If wrong, a brief why would be nice.

Hi Rod,
No, I'd say it's right as it stands (although possibly it's not really that clear-cut). The thing about the proposals for redevelopment is that they included keeping some of the buildings and transforming them into a museum/conflict studies centre, which some unionists would see as an IRA shrine in all but name.
Although I say it's possibly too clear-cut because some parts of the site are listed buildings for their historical importance, which was done under a unionist environment minister, and the initial proposals for making a sports stadium on the site came from a unionist minister, too. But yeah, in broad terms, it's probably right that opposition came more from unionists.
Does that help any?
