Dylan Thomas got me seriously into poetry. Perhaps my favourite poem is Anne Sexton's The Truth The Dead Know - look it up if you aint read it.
I love unfree poetry, not neccessarily using some predone form or template - but creating your own, to fit the mood and intention of a piece. Free poetry is fine, but avoiding rhymes and patterns is no less artificial than engaging with them. I blame unwillingness to do this for the fact that now so few poets are widely read who are not also song writers.
