It's totally different from Unitarian Universalism! I am very wary of being deceived - so I am reading quite carefully, but really it all seems to make sense to me.. I first came across the concept while reading a book by William Barclay in the '90s, a Bible commentary on Matthew.
It's interesting stuff..

The origianl statements though just didnt seem to sit with the things I have read in the bible and been taught.
I will keep having a read but am inclined to think there is something not right

That's fair enough, and I wouldn't want anything to do with Unitarian Universalists.
But although some CUs get a bit carried away, I think the fundamental principles actually are sound.
Here's Barclay's article, which my brother had printed years back..

Have you heard of George MacDonald? C S Lewis called MacDonald his 'mentor'. MacDonald was an Universalist. He believed, as do I and some of the people on the various CU websites, that although some, perhaps most people would have to go to heaven via a salutary spell in hell first, others believe that everyone will go straight through!
The linguistic reasons for thinking that hell is remedial and not permanent, make sense to me...
The verse that impressed me most when I first heard of the concept was
1 Timothy 4:10
10(and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.
At first I couldn't believe that's actually what it said!
But don't stress about it, if you're not comfortable with it, you don't have to accept it, it's not something you have to accept. And yes, evangelism is still important!
