About me
Hello !
Not really certain what to write here, or how much, but here goes:
I'm in UK, late fifties, male heterosexual, divorced twice,
ex art teacher. Actually, I'm not that comfortable writing about myself as I have a lot of interests, and putting it all in sentences might bore you. So, lists it is, then :
MUSIC : play guitar, but not much now.
Listen to all sorts : Billie Holiday, Blind Willie McTell, Mamie Smith, Skip James, Fred McDowell, early Staple Singers, Carter Family, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Bob Dylan( 1960-1970),James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis (1966-1975), John Coltrane (1960-1967), Velvet Underground, Cassandra Wilson, Mahler, Bach (piano, rather than harpsichord for those who know what I mean !), Couperain, Bax, Schoenberg, and Delius. And lots more.
ART : paint, draw, illustrate. I gave up teaching to get on with my own work.
Artists I particularly admire : Durer, Burne-Jones, Dore, Cruikshank, Mucha, Edvard Munch, Kandinsky, Max Beckmann, Picasso, Leger, Pollock, Warhol, and Robert Crumb( drawing style, and some subject matter. I find his obscene material rather banal and immature. Given that he came from a sadly dysfunctional family, perhaps it was cathartic for him ).
WRITERS : Dickens, Brontes, Robert Sheckley, Primo Levi, Stephen Fry, Lynne Tillman, and many more.
Subjects : general historical, Celts, Arthurian material,
Romany/ gypsy, folklore. Over the years I've bought many books on a wide range of subjects, mostly non-fiction. Had a sci/fi phase about 15 years ago, where I read all the classic titles. I found most of it tedious, except for The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, and some excellent stuff by Robert Sheckley. It is my opinion that Douglas Adams lifted the Sheckley style and used it to write Hitchhiker. Read the pre-Hitchhiker Sheckley work, and you will not fail to see what I mean.
FILMS : My grandfather ran several cinemas, and I have always loved films. My preferences include :
Directors : Tarrantino, Lars Von Trier, David Lynch.
Early silents : Melies, Griffiths, the classics such as Nosferatu, Metropolis, Dr Caligari, etc. Also all Buster Keaton, and some Chaplin.
With sound : Cagney, Bogart, the Universal horrors, film noir.
Animation : all Disney shorts and features, Manga, and things like Belleville Rendezvous.
Blockbusters : most of the things like Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Terminator, and so on.
TV : The Bill, Foyles War, Midsomer Murders, Simpsons.
Old TV : Munsters, Colombo, Jeeves and Wooster(Fry and Laurie), and Blackadder.
COMEDY : Eddie Izzard, Eddie Murphy, Ardel O'Hanlon.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
