Nick Rambles Muchly - series 2 episode 1

Back for another mind-sizzling series! Is your mind sizzling yet? If so, get your head out of the microwave!

At the moment I am listening to the radio, and they are catting about the upcoming Iron Maiden gig at Twickenham. Apparently, you can win, not a backstage ticket, but an onstage ticket! A ticket that lets you sing onstage with Iron Maiden! I'd love to go up and do Hallowed be Thy Name with them. I can't sing that for s#&%! It does however have good lyrics. For instance:

I'm waiting in my cold cell,
As the bell begins to chime,
Reflecting on my past life,
And it doesn't have much time.
'Cause at five o'clock,
They take me to the gallows pole,
And the sands of time, for me are running looooowwwwwww.

Running looooooooow-oooooooooooowww.

As the priest comes to read me the last rights,
I take a look through the bars at the last sights,
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me.
Can it be that there's some sort of error,
Hard to stop the surmounting terror,
Words escape me, when I try to speak.
Tears fall but why am I crying,
After all I'm not afraid of dying,
Don't I believe that there never is an end.

Cue guitar solo:

Twang-de-doo-doo-dee-doo-doo...

Ah. I seem to have gone off on one a bit their. Forgive me.

Anyway, did you know that radio adds bite? I didn't until I heard an advertisment advertising advertisment air-time. It had a website on it, and I visited it, and it makes all sorts of claims about how briliant radio is for making advertising campaigns gooder.

Ah, it seems I have to go. See you next episode in Nick Rambles Muchly, Series 2. Yes, that's right, it's mind-sizzling. Feel your brain burn! BURN!

Bye.

Nick Rambles Muchly - episode 10

OH MY GOD!

It's the tenth episode already!

I think it's time for a best of, don't you?

"In fact, in the north of Russia there are a small group of people who speak a unique language. It is the only language known to man to have a suffix for ‘smells like’. Amazing. Amazing but true."

"Talking of special, are you having anything nice for dinner tonight? I'm not."

"Thank you, and goodnight."

"Sanity is, as far as can be shown, the ability to aquire morals, virtues and standards, and the ability to adhere to them. This being so, it is quite possible that there are no insane people on the planet."

""

"An ant farting is the quietest sound in nature. No, really it is."

"Oh, and just so you know, the irrational fear of palindromes (words that are spelt the same forwards and backwards) is called aibohphobia"

"Now wash your hands."

"SUMMARY:

The reaction starts relatively slowly due to the low amount of energy, but as more energy is released by the exothermic reaction the rate increases (then more energy released, faster, etc.) until a large enough amount of the reactants is used up to slow the reaction down (then more used, slower, etc.) until all reactants are used up, causing the reaction to stop. This is that traditional 's' shape you get with most exothermic reactions."

Well, I hope you enjoyed that. A fine selection of witty remarks indeed. Now, I'm off down the pub.

Yours sincerely

Nick Rambles Muchly - episode 9

Why does it form this shape?

It is quite definitely something to do with collision theory (blindfolded people in a room)

Increase in heat, then reduction in number of unreacted particles?

Cannot be an increase in unreacted particles, so must be an increase in energy.

This energy must come from somewhere, and there is no external influence that could cause this. The reaction is slightly exothermic.

Therefore: The extra energy must come from the reaction itself. (in theory, with a large enough amount of magnesium and hydroclauric acid I could increase the rate of reaction to such a degree that I could cause enough heat to melt the earth)

HOWEVER: this does not explain the later slowing of the reaction.

The only two things that have an effect on the rate of reaction as far as collision theory is concerned are amount of energy and concentration of reactants. The higher of either of these is, the faster the rate of reaction. Consequently, the lower either of these is the slower the rate of reaction will be.

This means that to cause the later slowing of the reaction, one of these must reduce.

The amount of energy does not reduce, as more is produced by the reaction itself.

Therefore: The slowing must be due to the fact that at a certain point, enough of the reactants have been used up to cause the reaction to lose its 'momentum', and slow down.

SUMMARY:

The reaction starts relatively slowly due to the low amount of energy, but as more energy is released by the exothermic reaction the rate increases (then more energy released, faster, etc.) until a large enough amount of the reactants is used up to slow the reaction down (then more used, slower, etc.) until all reactants are used up, causing the reaction to stop. This is that traditional 's' shape you get with most exothermic reactions.

Nick Rambles Muchly - episode 8

There's this new thing around called airsoft. It's like paintball but with BB guns. It looks quite good. I might go and try it some time. Not too expensive to hire the gear, but to buy it it could cost me quite a bit. It still looks quite good. Games last either half a day, a day, several hours at night, or several days. You can bring your own kit. It looks incredibly good. I will go and try it if I can.

Now wash your hands.
