SPRING

The gaiety of spring in bloom,
The greening of the trees.
The heady scent of blossom
Drifting on the breeze.
A festival of nesting birds
Hidden from the eye,
Caress the ear with music,
Sopranos of the sky.
There's beauty in a blade of grass,
A raindrop on a leaf.
So open up your hearts and minds,
And cast out winters grief.

POLESWORTH

In a village in a valley,
Is the place where I was born.
Dear old Polesworth near to Tamworth
Where I greeted my first dawn.
I close my eyes to reminisce,
And the mist of memory clears.
I hear the calls of childhood friends
Echoing through the years.
I smile as I think of my old school,
The Nethersole C of E.
Where Mr Knight the headmaster
Taught the three Rs to me.
I remember the old 'dungeon entry',
Where we'd knock on the door and then run.
Fearful in case we'd awakened
The ghost of a long dead nun.
I recall the church of St. Editha,
Benevolent and timeworn.
Playing host to our aspirations
And fetes on the vicarage lawn.
Yes, a multitude of memories,
Come crowding back to me.
Of the Polesworth of my childhood
Where my heart will ever be.
