I always prefer to ask, just to prevent problems.
Also I prefer a short friends list of those I have met and enjoy their company rather than those who collect friends like badges. 
Pleased you got home safe, and thank-you for your company! It made the weekend, and hope to see you again soon! Maybe even the Big One?
