Some tragic news

I heard something very sad yesterday.

A friend and colleague was out climbing in Glencoe this weekend with a friend of his who was killed falling off a cliff. I'd heard that someone had been killed from the radio news, and at the time I thought....'I hope that wasn't....'

I didn't know the guy myself, but I'd heard about him through my friend, who'd recently come to me for some advice. The guy was suffering from bi-polar disorder, which wasn't being diagnosed or treated properly. He'd become severly depressed and then was finally admitted to hospital after he'd disappeared from his home and was found in some woods having tried to cut his hand off. However, he'd finally stabilised on Lithium, and was discharged from hospital the week before his accident. I'm told he was very happy last weekend and there are some great photos of him and his wife on top of snow-capped mountains.

It was really sad that this happened after a terrible, terrible two year period which started with him being seriously injured in a road accident (possibly triggering his b-p).

Apparently he's having a Humanist funeral next Friday, featuring music by Sparks, T Rex and Sid Vicious. He was a well known and popular guy, so it will be well attended.

...and then they all come at once...

'nother one. My entry on the German Anti-Nazi Georg Elser has made front page at last. Coincidentally on the very day that I remembered to ask where it had gone.

Also, I believe my Ergonomics one A3213127 made it between Xmas and New Year:

By the way..don't anyone be offended if I appear inactive over the next wee while. Work pressures mean I have to wean myself off my addiction temporarily.

Suggestions wanted

Happy etc etc and I hope you all survived the recent hostilities...er...festivities.

Anyway - having recently bought a DVD player but only having used it once (for the excellent White Stripes live DVD I got from Santa), I've now signed up for Amazon's online rental. It's the usual kind of deal. They send you three from a list you've compiled and when you return one they send you another. Of the UK ones, Amazon seem to be the cheapest - although the mess they made of my Xmas orders doesn't bode well.

So...tomorrow I should receive Goodbye Lenin, Y Tu Mama Tambien and 1 more (possibly Hana-Bi - but I forget). Only, so far my list is a little too Art House and my mind has gone completely blank as to other stuff I've missed in the last couple of years (I don't get to the cinema often). So can anyone suggest anything good? Either from Hollywood or from the Real World? Two examples of films I enjoyed on TV in the last few days are Training Day and The Astronaut's Wife.

And, no...this is NOT an opportunity for me to catch up on Star Wars. Shan't shan't shan't!smiley - smiley
