OK but I've sort of said most of what I intended to say already. I've got to do some tedious washing and packing for my trip tomorrow, so I may or may not have time to get on this before I leave.

*slips in the side door* Hi there, apologies for lurking. Just wanted to say that while I consider myself a religious person (I'm a Universalist), I also find prejudice against gays and lesbians completely unacceptable. I think it's very reasonable to get upset in the face of homophobia! I'm lucky that my church is a "welcoming congegation", meaning that gays and lesbians are valued members. Unitarian Universalism is not biblically/dogmatically based, but draws on the more openminded, loving, and fair aspects of many faiths. And I might add, we have a fair number of atheists in our congregation, who are also welcome. I know that may sound like a contradiction in terms, but the atheists and nonatheists at our congregation get along very well. I'm sorry to see that homophobic views have reared their ugly head on hootoo. Religious people who spout such views make people like me look bad, it looks like everyone religious is intolerant. But sometimes an intolerant bleep is just a bleep! Hmmm, Ed, I know what you are thinking! That Universalists are a tiny minority, and that the damage religion does outweighs the good. I may be in a minority, but it's a minority I would like to see spread!

Hmmm, didn't realize I was sort of resurrecting a thread which was about over anyway. Sorry.

Not quite my argument, JEllen. Yes, it's true that, on the whole, I have an aversion to religion. On the other hand, I've met many good, religious people - not least you. I can't comment on the proportions of good to bad.

My problem is more that while religion *pretends* to offer guidance - really it doesn't. We can see that it leads people in all sorts of directions, some good, some bad. So how can we choose between 'God hates fags' and 'No she doesn't?'. I say only on non-religious grounds.
