Now that I didn't know. Alasdair Grey refers to Langholm as 'The Long Town' in '1982, Janine'. (A well mucky book. Highly recommended )

OK...I'll let you out of your misery.
The point is that Mars is in opposition at the moment, so it's particularly braw and crammasy. It's also visible all night, unusually high in the sky. Check it out on the next available clear night. Even in a city you can't miss it.
It's also in retrograde motion through the zodiac.
