Hi - an excellently written piece that has (unfortunately) taken me a time to wade through - i have added a couple of footnotes, a couple of links and corrected minor typos etc.

To be honest, I'd lost track. I thought this had already been published. I have to say...I think this is the best thing I've written so far (excuse the arrogance) - yet it was the slowest to be picked up.

btw...all you need to make a link is the number: A5141369 They don't tell you these things!

Oooh! Intelligentsia, populace, Quixotic, cadres...don't like! If the readers can't understand basic English they need to buy a dictionary!

Seriously, though...I don't think it's really house style to footnote 'difficult' words. If they'd been specialist words that related to this particular subject, that would be another matter.

At a pinch, I'd allow 'cadres' - but not as a footnote. Maybe brackets (the paid-up commumist leaders)
