the accidental emigrant
By way of coincidence and serendipity I found my way from Scotland to rural Cyprus almost five years ago and they haven't thrown me out yet. I am now officially an ex-pat., but I try not to be a Little Britisher. I was widowed at the grand old age of 38 in 1995 and I'm almost 50 now(that looks horrible in print) but I have the heart and stomach of a king! - no, sorry, a much younger woman (although I think she wants them back (the old ones are still the best)). I have loved every word that Douglas Adams ever wrote since I first saw the TV series. I miss him terribly - it's awful knowing that there will never be another Dirk Gently novel - and I share his admiration of Wodehouse. Funnily enough my late husband, who was a journalist and broadcaster, met DNA once and said he was a lovely man.
My kids came with me in 2002 but have grown up and buggered off so now there's just me and the dog and cats. In order to avoid becoming the mandatory crazy old lady that every street has I looked up h2g2 and here I am. Talk to me about anything. I know very few people who can sustain an intelligent conversation in English and most of them are locked into the marriage and family thing that's so strong here - women just don't go down the pub for a drink - their husbands wouldn't like it. And as for having male friends; I don't think it's actually illegal but I believe they can send you for psychiatric evaluation. This is a beautiful, relatively peaceful and crimefree place to live and I can pick lemons from my own tree instead of paying Sainsburys a fortune for them but it still has to crawl into the 20th century. So save me from an eternity of crochet and wearing men's socks!
