Although you've been here for quite some time already, nobody seems to have noticed. This is not how it's supposed to be. We want you to feel welcome on H2G2, the earth edition of the Guide.
Therefor I now bring you greetings on behalf of all researchers here, and express our hopes that we will see more of you some time. We are in general quite a friendly and helpful bunch of creatures, and would like to entertain you and be entertained by you.
Please join us in some of our conversations, and visit some of the pages of people addressing you, by simply clicking their names over the messages they send you. Maybe that way you'll find a lot of things that may interest you.
If you have no idea's on where to go first, feel free to click on http://www.h2g2.com/A214796 and visit the ACEs, who are here especially to help! They collect interesting links, and offer help in navigating this site, which contains quite a lot of stuff on all kinds of topics.
We hope to hear/read from you soon.
Have fun,
~Skeleton

And another note from the dead guy :-) I noticed you joined the H2G2-researchers at SETI@home. Welcome to the club. I'll add you to the list at http://www.h2g2.com/A195879 :-) There's only one little thing I want to mention about the URL you typed in the configuration over there. You must remove the bit "http://" in front of that link, because the SETI-system ads that automatically. Now if someone hits your name, they get an error because the browser can't find "http://http://www.h2g2.com/U77889".

Oops! Thanks for the words of wisdom. I'll go remove the redundant information right now.
Thanks for stopping by to say hello. I was feeling sorta lonely out here. Been afraid of some major faux pas, so've been pretty quiet. Nice to have a name of someone to pester. And dang it, I've forgotten how to put the smiley face already. Pbbbblllt.

You're welcome, Stella.
Everyone can forget something now and then, don't worry about it
Here we go with the smileys:

Don't ask me how I did this trick :-)

Hi Stella!

I see. Foolishly, I was expecting the face to immediately appear, that's what had me perplexed. I like the fishy. Let's see if I have the hang of it .
I don't seem to have the hang of the Seti deal. I've been running it since last night but only have 29% completed and 14.5 hours of cpu time. I feel like I'm letting science everywhere down. Work little computer, work as if your very bits depended on it.

When doing the smileys or the fishy for the first time, it's quite reasonable to expect them to appear while typing. However, once you've seen how it works, you learn to live with it
About the seti thing: do you know what type of computer you have, (CPU type & speed, memory size) ?
My system has a 400MHz CPU and 128 MB, and when I first ran SETI, it also did 2% per hour, just like yours does now. Now mine's working over 5% per hour.
If you have a system with 64 MB or more, and your CPU is 200 MHz or better, then click http://www.h2g2.com/A193231#SETI-speed . On that page I've explained how to make the SETI program run faster. If you've already done that bit, then maybe your machine just is working as fast as it can. Don't worry about the speed then, and let it continue at it's own pace. When the packet is ready, it will check with you if it's allowed to go online to send the results and get a new load of work to do.
You're NOT letting anyone down! You're offering your spare CPU-time to a project that needs it badly, and you're here to entertain us, and be entertained. You're doing all that's humanly possible.

Hi , I'm a newbie here myself , and just dove in. So far nobody has taken a pot shot at me ( tolerant group I guess ) . I suspect the more you post the more others will get to respond.

Well, goodness, somebody else stumbled across me. It's hard balancing the paradox of not wanting to have postings out there anyone can see and think I'm a blithering idiot with the need to be seen.
Stopped by your page. Even though once upon a time I was a government student, anarchy, societal politics, cyclical history, ancient civilizations, all topics I tend to let go over my head. Heck, I'm from the state offering up Dubya (the esteemed George W. Bush, for those fortunately out of U.S. politics)--substantive discourse? Heck, just be charming, don't say too much and have lots of money. Gosh, I'm o-fer by those standards .

Well most of the time I just hang out in the bush ( trees rather then presidential hopefulls ) read science fiction, cut firewood and design electronics . Also collect comic strips online as a past time , feel free to babble about almost anything.

Hmmmm, I seem to be tripping over Fourmyle quite a bit lately. Must be one of them synchronicity things.
Anyhow, after missing you in the "where are our researchers from" topic, I figured I'd pop by and say hello. No need to be scared of a faux pas around H2G2 (you've probably figured that out by now), as this is an uncommonly friendly place.
Thanks for that bunch of links -- keeping up with the news is something I do off and on, and I hadn't run across some of the ones you mention.
