Hi Andy.
Wonder if you'll find this!
The air was blue a minute ago as I'd composed a nice chatty message but posted at 00.00 - TOO LATE!
I like h2g2 as I can waffle on after midnight.
Interesting list of Favourite Composers.
Goodnight!

Midnight! Butter!
Hi MJ
Have never used this board before. V surprised when yr post appeared on my list of discussions although I couldn't access it directly. And I didn't know it went on past midnight!

Hi Andy - that link (from Discussions pages) has been broken for months now - hence paranoid poster accusing me and my h2g2 friends of all sorts of wicked deeds on his QQ "Alert" thread! I find h2g2 really handy. I'm in regular contact with half a dozen "h2g2 friends". My page is awkward though, as having first registered through Radio 3, only those who have done likewise can post to me on mine! Having said that I noticed just now that you posted a NO!!! to the R3 Wagner question! So you may be able to. Not that you need to. I've just enjoyed the last 40 mins of Gotterdamerung but managed to avoid most of the rest today! I love some bits. And fall asleep to most of the rest.
Sorry, waffling away. I'll leave you in peace now.
Jane

Hi MJ
I think I first registered with h2g2 some time ago which is why I've got an entry here - but I'm not even sure exactly what h2g2 is. I just put the list of composers on because otherwise the page looked very bare - but it does more or less reflect my likes - and they don't include Wagner!
The NO!! to Wagner was on a R3 "waffle" thread (rather similar to some at Mornington Crescent) which was attacked by a troll today and some people were getting rather upset about it.
More I Spy tomorrow.

Your h2g2 page is automatically there once you've registered with a BBC messageboard. Can't remember who told me about mine but the BBC should have told us about h2g2 when they were telling us all about the move to the new boards.
There is a danger that people divulge too much personal information on them as it feels quite private but of course it isn't. I've had long-running music discussions on various h2g2 threads which have been a lot more fun than the times I've tried to talk to posters on R3 threads. I'm sure there are some lovely R3 posters but I've never felt that I belonged over there.
I really am going now!

Bu**er bu**er bu**er I've done it again - but this computer said 23.57!!!
And I'd written such a nice post too.
If you're around before I am tomorrow then perhaps you could post my ISWMLESBW....C P on my behalf!
Goodnight!

The MC gates have closed!!
I think I signed up for h2g2 (not really knowing what it was but it was another login/password to add to the large list I've got!) before I went on any of the MBs - in May 2004 from the look of things.
I know what you mean about the R3 MBs - especially "Classical Music on R3". I visited several times on the old boards but never hung around for long, mainly because I felt that there were/are some people who try to dominate and control the whole thing. And there are a few trolls - very musically knowledgable people but determined to argue with everyone. It's also dominated, perhaps to a lesser extent now, by the Friends of Radio 3.
I tend to stick to the Andy Kershaw/World Routes and New Music boards where there are very few posters but they're mostly pretty genuine - there's one poster on the AK board who said, like you, that they feel out of place but I might suggest h2g2 to him/her now I know how it works.
The "waffle" thread which I mentioned is an interesting development since it's much more like the MC board, ie people just talking rubbish, but many got very upset last night when it was attacked by a real troll - sounded like someone from the BNP - and people just didn't know how to respond - even the Host fell into the trap of responding to it.
Congrats on getting MJ btw MJ!

oops!! crossed in the post.
if I've got more than a few words to post I sometimes write it to a text file so that I don't lose it if something goes wrong eg the gates closing

I should say though Andy that when I posted a question on R3 ( in November I think it was) asking for help identifying a piece of music my father remembers singing long ago, the response couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. They were falling over themselves to come up with the right answer! The competitive enthusiasm was quite amusing!
The Archers boards are now back to 24 hours with posts appearing instantly - though for people like me with no self-discipline this is a Bad Thing!
Afraid I'm not into World music and new music - more the classical and in particular Italian opera. (Brought up on it you see!)
Yes, spread the h2g2 word and perhaps you could register a complaint too re broken link from Discussions.
Best wishes,
MJ

Oh I hadn't realised you weren't replying to mine! Great minds...or fools if you prefer!
You no longer lose a post-midnight post as you can go back to it but I didn't bother this time as the frivolous spontaneity is lost somewhat if you can only post it the following afternoon!
Night night
MJ - I am not a Marmite Jar but I do like Marmite! Converted to Reduced Salt Natex these days though as Marmite makes me and the kids too thirsty.

No! not the Archers MB!
I daren't get involved in that, I waste enough time as it is. Been invited to play an Archers game(!) by a friend who is a real fanatic - don't quite know what to expect, sounds like the group of us have to "act" out the characters!!
PS "Pretentious pterodactyl" on TA MB sounds like something from I Spy!!

I was amazed by the range of different people the Bull attracts. Some threads wouldn't be out of place on WoM, others on MC or even R3 Classical. I was brought up on the Archers (my mum is the addict; the Italian opera was my dad's influence) but only listen when it happens to be on.
Being nosy now, do you play/sing yourself, having such an interesting taste in music? You don't have to answer!
Must go!

Hi MJ
What are your favourite operas then? I was mad about opera some years ago but I don't go to live performances very much now. However my faves are:
La Traviata
Don Giovanni
La Boheme
Marriage of Figaro
Turandot
(not necessarily in that order)
Was listening earlier to a recording I made of Angela Gheorghiu as Violetta in the 1st 2 acts of La Trav, broadcast recently on R3.
bws,
Andy

Was about to go having forced myself to notice the time...so quickly, whichever one of these Verdi operas I'm listening to/watching at the time: Don Carlos, Un Ballo in Maschera, Luisa Miller (esp. that last act, heard recently on R3) Rigoletto and ditto with Puccini, Boheme, Tosca, La Fanciulla del West...
Perhaps I should explain (unless you've read this on R3 board ages ago or my h2g2 posts to HtoHe on hi h2g2 page, that I was brought up on opera as my father sang in the chorus at Covent Garden for over 20 years. So some operas bring back fond memories even if I wouldn't choose to go and listen to or watch them now. Some scenes in Boris I love but I wouldn't class it as a favourite opera. Oh and Werther and Andrea chenier because the performances were fabulous (Carreras, Domingo - those were such memorable nights for me!) and so many more I can't list now!
This was longer than intended! Must stop. I enjoy watching/listening to all those on your list. Angela G I think is marvellous but not so struck with hubby Roberto. You see I was spoiled hearing Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras in their prime many times!
Sorry Andy you've probably gone now! Goodnight/morning!
MJ

Doesn't time fly when you start reading stuff! I'd gone to look at the photos in the Archers Lock-in to put a face to some of the names.
Back at work next week so I shouldn't be here quite so much then...shouldn't be here now either!

Hi Andy,
Just been to see where you posted on a couple of threads in the Bull. Posting after midnight isn't good though - I already spend too long here.

You have to register first but you can use an existing email address.
I was trying to iron instead of messageboarding this evening but one of the kids has, I reckon, sat on/jumped on the ironing board as it's broken...the metal legs are actually bent and the board won't go up further than 18" above the floor. Now, I know I'm short but even I need one higher than that...
Goodnight,
MJ

Not quite sure how but got to bed at 3am!! I can't have been on TA MB for 3 hours surely!! What have you led me into MJ? Got into a surreal discussion at c2-30 and one of yr friends appeared after I'd gone - see http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbarchers/F2693943?thread=2781709 I'm concluding that this relates to some code similar to that which allows you to put the date/time etc at the top of each post - is that so? Don't know what I'm being accused of when it was suggested that I might be Alex Hebden!! Have just found some posts by him/her but can't be bothered to read thru them. Oh well, back to simple things like I Spy (but not now) bws Andy
