Seeing as I'm only here signed up as a member to better study this war which seems on-going. It would not be in my best interests at this stage to converse with those involved.

I started by keeping links in a text file but as my interest and the number of links grew. The text file approach became impractical.

It's nothing of the sort, Hoo, I confused Bain with Apparition. Easy mistake to make as they're always in the same threads.

But once again, I really would warn against challenging people about maintaining multiple accounts...

"I confused Bain with Apparition. Easy mistake to make as they're always in the same threads."

Oh, I'm sorry. I assumed that due to your position on the staff you had some actual information, e.g. server logs, showing the user maintaining the Bain account to be originating from the same IP address, perhaps having a similar username and/or password, as the operator of the Apparition account. A similar process in 2001 unequivocally showed the operator of an account styled "Silent Lucidity" was incontrovertibly the same as the operator of a previous, banned account styled "Arpeggio". From the certainty of your tone I inferred that you had similar technical information from the BBC servers linking "Apparition" to "Bain". If not, well, OK. You're just as "confused" as the rest of us... smiley - winkeye

Not at all. Like I say, everyone I know of with the exception of Della and Bain just assume Bain is Apparition, because every single piece of information *publicly* available here suggests this very strongly and nothing contradicts it.

I just thought you were privy to some private, BBC server type info that confirmed it. smiley - shrug

I couldnt imagine a member of BBC staff being so annoyed with someone but being bound to act nuetrally having an involutary spasm and posting something to "out" a person accidentally, but then my imagination isnt very good.

I never suggested it was accidental.

Well someone's not as bright as they pretend to be. Or is ignoring ramdom assigned dial up ISP IP addresses of massive masqueraded corperate or organisational Single IP addresses.

"Well someone's not as bright as they pretend to be."

That much is certain.

Someone remembers very clearly this type of information, and others, being used to identify the fact, incontrovertibly, that two accounts on h2g2 had been operated from the same PC, even though the operator of the second account had sworn black's white that they did not even KNOW the person who operated the first. Specifically, this happened in November 2001 to the account then styled "Silent Lucidity". You, Bain, were not involved in any way in interactions with that person. I was, so I remember very clearly the staff of h2g2 having access to, and using, information gleaned from the BBC servers to prove this.

Also, what you call "random assigned" IP addresses are what are actually called "dynamically assigned", and in reality are not nearly as random as you might think. Back when I was still on dial-up, in a typical week I'd be assigned no more than about ten different IP addresses over the course of about, say, three dozen sessions - and these addresses only differed in the last figure - the first three were the same, which is a bit like knowing that something has been sent from the same street, just not knowing which house number.

As I say, I have prior experience on this site of the staff having access to a LOT more information than you or I, information you may not even realise you are transmitting to them every time you use the site. I simply assumed that Jimster was speaking a position of certainty, which under the circumstances, given what I know, was reasonable. Once again you, speaking from ignorance, have a rather less reasonable position.

ooo it took you just half an hour to look that up. I was dumbing it down for you smiley - bigeyes

Depending on the budget of the ISP they have a number of IP addessses, a range if you will, that they lease and dial up users get one as they dial on a first come first serve basis. In the real world we call this random. I remember looking at dial up logs for billing smiley - geek

Bain,

Let me repeat, since you seem to have missed it: my understanding of this dates back to November 2001. I had no need to look anything up. As for the rest... smiley - shrug whatever.
