My mother sometimes watches "dallas" re-runs so I thought I should drop you a note.

Urgh... "Dallas" did more to build stereotypes of Texans than anything else.
I never watched the show myself. Not that I'm unaware of what was on it as it was ubiquitous while it aired. You couldn't avoid knowing the Ewings and wondering "who shot JR" whether you watched television or not.
Believe it or not, most Texans do NOT wear cowboy hats (many do, but not most).
If you want a more accurate (and entertaining) depiction of Texans try to find King of the Hill. It's a cartoon that airs right before the Simpsons here. It's by the creator of Beavis and Butthead and the movie Office Space (which was filmed in Dallas).
