Why this subject?
Well I have found the perfect opportunity to express a specific subject of interest which will be of use to fellow nerds! I absolutely love facts and information that are part of our everyday lives but people seem to know so little about. My specific subject if not passion is that of the identity, the true identiy of the counties/shire system of particularly England and Wales. I seem them as more than just bodies of local government but as an intrinsic part of who we are and what makes us as a people. You cant just "abolish" a county but that is what Whitehall still persist in doing. At least many are still here to remember the real counties but slowly people are going to identify their council as their county despite over a thousand years of history. I first got into the subject as a child when studying a administrative map of the UK. What were (sorry ARE) Westmorland and Rutland. Since then my interest has developed into a passion and I have spent much time researching the history of the English County structure which is more complicated than just boundaries and who empties your bins on a Thursday.
