Mr D
Just ignore this intrusion if you wish but I was moved by some of your postings in the physics thread to come over here and be gratuitously interfering.
I was like you, fannied around at school and never got anywhere near reaching my potential.
Comprehensive education in Scotland in the 70s was not wonderful in terms of exciting and inspiring teenagers - though I have to take some personal blame too.
What I really want to say is - it's never too late to change things. I finally decided what I really wanted to do in my mid-thirties - and I went for it; was motivated to study hard, stayed at the top of the class and copped every prize going on the way.
Granted, I had a husband to support me financially - but I also had to give up a job and had three children to worry about and a house to run.
It was worth the hardship and difficulties to get where I wanted to be and I have never regretted any of it.
Those years I spent dabbling around I don't regret either; I have learned something from every crappy job I ever did.
So - it's not too late. You're obviously very intelligent - one of the sharpest wits to appear on Hootoo for quite a while - and I'm very glad you found your way into the atelier.
Weigh up a few years hardship and penury against a possibilty of feeling unfulfilled and frustrated for the rest of your life?
Apologies if I'm projecting too many of my own emotions onto you.
Meant with the very best of intentions, T
(ps - after 26 they class you as a mature student and you get a bit more help)

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Jan 7, 2005
Myself, Mrs. D, and a couple of friends were actually talking about this the other day. I'm actually thinking about going back and re-doing my English and History GCSEs, and then moving on the A levels and suchlike.
Thanks for the advice and compliments.
