Just seen your bit in the Talking Point and thought I'd drop by - I do medieval martial arts, too What's your period/preference for arms? And what kind of a group do you practice in? Always makes me happy to see there are more of us

Hmmm... out of the limited amount I've done so far, my favourite thing is the longsword... so period-wise about 14th-15th Century.
The group I practice with is an eclectic mix of people linked by a common goal: learn how to hit people with swords! We mainly use the works of Fiore dei Liberi and Hans Talhoffer with occasional digressions into other texts when Alan (head honcho) finds something cool.
The group's website is here: http://www.messenger-longsword.org.uk/

Incidentally I'm trying to do an Entry on Medieval martial arts. Fancy helping out?

Oooh, yes, sounds fun - let's collaborate
My period is a bit earlier, I train in a mixed group of Vikings and High Middle Ages, about 1250 (my specialty) I prefer a short sword and shield, can get by with a bastard sword, though. Never tried a longsword, I'm too short for those I *can* manage with a spear, and am awful at axes
I'll take a better look at your page later. I'd send you ours, but it's all in German...

I've added you to the Entry's list of researchers. A20694620
Send me the site anyway... if nothing else I can use Babelfish to translate it and have a good laugh at all the bits it gets wrong.

Have fun with that! Some videos, even. But those are from when we do choreographies, we do both "free" fights and shows, plus take part in those huge reenactment battles sometimes

That was a comment about our homepage, I think. Hey fish, watch out what you say 'bout my homepage!
Looks like we train at the same time, even, we're on Tuesdays 8-10 pm as well. But we're also Sundays 3.00-6.30 pm

Yup... and there's talk of doing an additional class every weekend for free sparring, etc.
I'll let you know if it ends up being Sundays 3:00-6:30pm
Ooh we have much coolness happening in the next six months. Apparently we're being visited by Guy Windsor in January or February which will be very cool... but Alan's made him promise that he won't do his standard warm up! From what I've heard it's exhausting.

yes, do!
Oooooh Amazing! And yes, evil warmups abound. Our coach is a P.E. teacher. He recently introduced a new warmup with the words "This exercise makes marines cry for their mums" Luckily, he dropped it again, must've been to strenuous for him.
We should have a Knight Exchange sometime
