Take Me Out To The Ballgame ...

I've spent the last two days going to baseball games. I took my niece to a New York Mets game on Sunday (and they finally won! Alleluia!), and last night went to a Long Island Ducks game (and they lost dismally! Shucks!).

It was a lot of fun, but I'm feeling a little queasy with all the hot dogs and peanuts churning in my belly ...

Swingin' Washington, D.C.

I recently got back from a visit to Washington, D.C. I visited a couple of friends who've relocated down there. I only went for 5 days, and barely scraped the surface, so I guess I'll just have to go back (if I can get the great airfare deal I got again, I'm definitely going back)!

I did some touristy stuff: The National Archives, the Air and Space Museum, and the National Gallery.

I'd have to say that the most fun I had though, was swing dancing on Saturday night! They give a quicky one hour lesson before the band started playing, and then you spend the rest of the night going from partner to partner trying not to stomp on any toes. Great fun!

Balloon Festival

This past weekend, I went to a Balloon Festival. Mostly it was a cheesey carnival and food booths serving greasy fare, but at dusk, they began to inflate the balloons. Now, this finally made it worth the price of admission! Aside from the traditional shaped balloons, they had balloons shaped like a giant polar bear, an ice cream cone, a strawberry, the Energizer Bunny, and a moving van (complete with moving man in the driver seat, hanging out the window)! After it got dark, they used the flame that is used for lift (I'm sure there's a term for it, be darned if I know what it is, though) to illuminate the interior of the balloons. Tres cool! Unfortunately, they didn't take off, as most of them remained tethered a few dozen feet above ground, but still very neat.

This was followed by a Beach Boys concert (I think there are one or two Boys left alive). I could take or leave the Beach Boys, but it was fun watching the people in the crowd singing and dancing, with their kids rolling their eyes at their parents, making believe they didn't know them.

The best part, by far, was the fireworks show! They have such cool fireworks now! There were smiley-faces, heart-shaped, and some that had silver stars glittering down like a rain shower, each wave appearing to get closer and closer to where you were seated. Very, very awesome!
