Just read your posts in the pop music thread and really enjoyed them. Thanks for the taste of home! As much as I love Chicago (where I live now), hearing from another Texan filled me with an urge to grab a Shiner Bock and go sit out by Town Lake and watch some bats.

Yup. I don't get to Austin much, mostly because the good bands come to Houston, saving me the drive. I will be in San Antonio in July for the SIGGRAPH show, a big computer graphics expo.
My wife grew up in Waukegan, and we have visited Chicago a few times. Its an interesting city, but I am not a fan of cold weather ...
BTW, I don't know if you saw my story about ordering a Shiner Bock in a Houston restaurant. They had two prices on the menu, "Imported" and "Domestic", with no labels shown. When the bill came, they charged me for "Imported". I pointed out that Shiner Bock is not even from out of state, much less out of the country. They stood their ground, saying it was "Premium" beer. Hard to argue with that.

Yes, I did see that posting and almost posted a reply! Have you been to the Shiner Brewery yet? When I went, they gave us all tokens for 3 free beers--which was great, but you had to consume them all right there, it was like 10 am and I just couldn't get through them all. Alas.
Enjoy your visit to SA. While your there, try to get to El Mirador for some sopa Azteca. Quite delicious! Not much point in seeing bands there--most all that go to SA also get to Houston--with the possible exception of some of the Tejano groups. When I was in college at Trinity, we'd get some of the LA bands which, for some reason, didn't always continue on to Austin. Not sure if that's the case anymore.
Sounds like your wife took the opposite path from mine--I couldn't wait to get away from the Texas heat, but I can definitely see how one might welcome it after a childhood of Northern Illinois winters. Actually, winters aren't the worst of it--it's the lingering chilliness that pervades spring here that gets to me. It's the first of May and we're still in sweaters!
