Many happy etc etc.
I'm afraid I have to admit a loathing of UB40, though. As you'll see from my PS, Reggae is a passion for me, so I know how it's *meant* to sound

Hey....
Reggae is more of an offbeat to a sound..
I like all sortsa reggae, even Lee 'Scratch' Perry and the Upsetters and of course old ska...like..Long Shot Kick De Bucket...etc..ever heard of Little Boy Blue?
I still like UB40.

Ok - since you've mentioned The Upsetter, I'll let you off. He's my reggae god.
And I assume that the title...'Homegrown'....refers to the ideal accompaniment?
I had a pleasant experience this weekend. I went along to Oddbins (note to non-UK readers: quirky chain of wine stores staffed my young, knowledgeable oenophiles) buy my usual bottle of Chilean red (anything by Concha y Toro can be relied on). Not only was there a particularly gorgeous new assistant - but they were doing a tasting AND the other assistant was playing Horace Andy/ King Tubby.

Te he, UB40 are good RL mates of mine, back in sunny Brum. i was "priveleged" enough to be teaching in a classroom merely yards away from the bedsit they started first practising in, ye gods, it may be easy listening now, but bloody hell, it took a lot of painful practice to get there, believe me!!!!
Hippo late late barfday greetings vix. I am reliably informed foxes in captivity need to eat cotton wool sandwiches to keep their fibre levels correct, so i advise you to nibble on those woolly socks in the meantime.
Oh, Ok then, you are a civilised vixen, go on then, have some and

That's true about the cotton wool. In fact...I'm just off to repeat that on the Useless Facts convo.
Also...pigeons need to eat gravel to help break down their stomach contents.
Bonobos, on the other hand, thrive on a diet of Chilean red wine and Budvar .

By the way...the best definition of Reggae I've ever heard: 'Rhythm and Blues played backwards'.
The early Jamaican pioneers like Toots Hibbert were trying to do cover versions of African-American songs - but traditional Nyabinghi rhythms crept into the mix. Anyway...it's more than just a back beat. It's a lot to do with which beats are stressed, and the way they slightly delay their time intervals. Golden rule for dancing (sorry - skankin' ) to reggae - dance on the off beat.
Can blue boys play the whites?

Happy birthday, MV! (For last Saturday.)
UB40 - I really liked their music back in 1980, but that's probably the more mainstream accessible stuff.
Many happy returns, as my old Dad and Mum used to say. (There's ajoke in there about radishes, but I can't quite remember it.)
