It would have to be the smallest of minds, plain ignorance or total jealousy to find fault with post 1.

It also brings to mind another saying that is true:- friends you can count (and count on), aquaintences are countless. smiley - smiley

Can I pose a question?
Is a good friend:
- Someone who _always_ takes your side?
- Someone who tells you when you are doing something daft?
- Someone who doesn't say anything but is always there?

I wouldn't expect my friends to always take my side, but to tell me when I'm being daft. Not necessarily in front of others, mind, but between us.

If they never said anything, how would I know they're there and what they think? Trying not to judge, yes. And smetimes, it may indeed be best not to say anything, but it all depends on the situation.

I think a friendship group is a good idea. Having friends for different purposes rather than a Swiss Army Penknife of a friend is good. Nobody is perfect. When an otherwise perfectly good friend doesn't measure up in one aspect it's a shame to discard them. Is this a bloke thing?

I know that there are friends I can go to when I am feeling a bit down. There are friends I can go to when I want to talk about something serious. There are friends I go to when I want practical help. There are friends I can go to when I want to be daft and many of these friends are in more than one of these groups.

I think I fill these roles for different people as well.

That's an interesting though, Vestie. I guess we all instinctively address this or that friend, depending on the situation. I've never put mine into 'categories', but I'm sure you have a point.

I don't think I consciously categorise them but I think that when a situation arises someone may spring to mind as the appropriate person to fit the situation. E.g. I know that when my wife goes to choose clothes there are some friends she would be happy to take with her and others that she wouldn't. It doesn't mean she doesn't like them but they don't fit the "buying clothes" scenario.
