Hello Peter,
I was reading the thread on Francis Benson and saw your comments on Carlo D'Este. How I agree with what you say. To me he is one of the best writers on WW2 and it is his "Bitter Victory" that started me on this two yeay trail on Operation Husky, the Italian campaign and the BBCi WW2 site.
While on the subject, how great to have the forgotten Italian campaign mentioned. In all the hype over D-Day the media have left out Cassino,
Ortona,The Gothic Line and Coriano Ridge Etc. Why? The return to Europe had taken place on the 10th July 1943!

Hi Colin
Those who fought in the steaming jungles of Burma are even more forgotten. Disease killed a lot, and to fall a prisoner to the Japanese was a cruel fate. But wherever they were sent, be it Italy, Normandy, or the Far East, servicemen just got on with it.
Unfortunately Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, El Alamein, and "D-Day" are now enshrined in the public mind as the only important events of WW2, everything else is regarded as a minor side-show.
