when is Halloween, I'll either be at work or doing what I would be doing normally
kids here do trick or treating nowadays but when I grew up Halloween wasn't anything special over here so I won't be doing anything for it

The Gunpowder Plot was an attempt by persecuted Catholics in the 17th century to blow up the Houses of Parliament at their yearly opening by the king. Guy Faekes, an Englishman who had served as a soldier with the Spanish was the man supposed to light the fuse
Nowadays its just an excuse for fireworks and a party

maybe you call them a different name
they are fireworks that are nailed to a post and go whizzing around in a circle, sending off sparks in all directions
1 of my favourites although sparklers were always the most fun

Arisztid Lugosi Posted Oct 1, 2004

yes, we used to have fireworks in the backgarden on Guy Fawkes night and the sparklers used to stop us kids getting bored whilst we waited for Dad to set the next off

haven't seen fireworks for a few years now
because of safety reasons people tend to go to organised displays over here nowadays rather than hold their own
they may be safer but a lot less fun
Why is it that just after I post a journal...
Arisztid Lugosi Posted Oct 1, 2004
hmm... well it seems only teenages play wiht fireworks and they can be so stupid about it, i'm not sure i'd want to be around them.... well thats the way it seems here anyway
Why is it that just after I post a journal...
Blackberry Cat , if one wishes to remain an individual in the midst of the teeming multitudes, one must make oneself grotesque Posted Oct 1, 2004
we get that a lot
for about 2 months most nights you hear fireworks
every year a few teenagers get seriously hurt
sometimes other people doing their own fireworks do as well (usually because they've done something stupid like gone to look at a firework that hasn't gone off, and then it does)
the big official displays are defnitely safer and they have some spectacular fireworks but they are less of a social ocasion than the ones that my parents and their neighbours would organise when we were kids

Arisztid Lugosi Posted Oct 1, 2004
yeah. well if you get a group of friends togheter and make the organized foreworks a sort of fun thing to all go to togheter it can be nice. for example i went to the canada day fireworks with some friends and we first went for icecreme and then we palyed a little frisbe and then watched the fireworks. it was quite nice

we used to go for classical concerts on Hampstead Heath where they also had fireworks for a friends birthday each year
took a picnic along and had a party at his flat afterwards
