Although, as of yet, I know of very few and have seen even fewer.
(I live in the deserted state of oklahoma..ugh)
I like the ones I do know though, and am always eager to learn/listen to/see others...
So...hi!
(Oh, I saw your song line conversation post, that's how I ended up here!)
Well, be seeing you!

Yay! I've found someone! And hey, Oklahoma has at least one good point about it--Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote a great musical about it!
I am obsessed with musical theater and I pride myself on being able to find a song for everything (that's how I joined that conversation), but I must confess I've been stumped many times since I found the conversation. Anyway, some of my favorite musicals are: The Phantom of the Opera, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sunday in the Park with George, 1776, and Evita. I haven't seen these all onstage, of course, though I'm working on that. I love Rodgers and Hammerstein, as I said, and I also worship Andrew Lloyd-Webber, and I think Stephen Sondheim is a master even though I actually don't like the themes of a lot of his work. I love theater in general, too. I just like being involved backstage and feeling the sense of controlled panic that occurs when you're working on a show (at least, in high school theater, which is the limit of my experience so far). Can't act, and can't sing, though I love singing in the shower. Nice to meet you!

By the way, what musicals have you seen, and which ones do you like?

Me? I feel the world should sing everything they say, or at the very least speak in a sing song voice..! So, naturally I love musicals!
As I said, I haven't seen many, mainly due to the fact that I'm young (therefore broke), in Oklahoma..(urg), and ect...
I have 'seen'only: Susical the Musical(giggle), Nunsense(in the little oklahoma theatre).
I watch tapes of any other musicals I can get my hands on: Jesus Christ Superstar(various versions), Cats...
I listen to sound tracks of broadway musicals(I have a darling friend who lives in Maryland, and is able to equip me with some much needed music: Rent, Le Mis, Hair Spray(soon to have)
The ones I have seen/heard/saw I commit to memory...
I can sing EVERY line of Rent....Almost every line of Jesus Christ Superstar, ect...
I LOVE THEM! (And I can't wait to see/hear/learn of more!)
So, do, please, speak!

You're absolutely right--it everyone in the world would sing all the time, think how may problems that would solve, wars, killing, people would stop being depressed…As for me, I get kinda self-concious sometimes, but when I'm not, or when I'm with people who will put up with my singing (or better yet, sing along with me), I just burst into song at random moments, whenever someone says something that makes me think of a song. And of course, especially a song from a musical. (Being a musical freak, of course, gives me a much wider range of subjects to find songs for, I think. I even know a song that goes "Walk, walk, trudge, trudge, slog, slog, travel, travel" and goes on from there. If that's not random, what is?)
I just moved to New York (mid-state, three hours drive to NYC and Broadway) a few months ago to start college, and I've been plotting ways to get the school to fund a trip to go see Hairspray on Broadway. (College student=no money, obviously.) I haven't come up with any really convincing reasons yet, but maybe if the Theater Club puts our heads together…
Other than that, I just saw Rent (the school did fund that one, part of the ticket price, anyway) at a local theater, and it was cool! And Seussical is coming there in the spring, though I haven't found anyone interested yet…lets see…Les Mis is AWESOME, and that's also coming in the spring (more plotting, hmmm…)

Yes! Everyone really should sing everything, unfortunately too many people are set aganist it...and wouldn't be caught dead singing. Sad, isn't it?
Oh, I would like to know what "Walk, walk, trudge, trudge, slog, slog, travel, travel"(After you mention it, I'll promptly look it up!)
And musicals are grand and fit for every occasion.
When I first discovered Rent, I plunged into memorizing everythign because I adored it so much, and now everything I heard makes me think of a line in rent. (That's what I first used the Song Line conversation for too.)
I, myself, will be in college in all of two months, where I hope to be able to locate more theatre-oreintated people who are willing to perform musicals with me...and visit theatres and such...Wish me luck!
Oh, Les Mis! Wondeful!

That "walk, walk, trudge, trudge" song is called "Traveling Music" and it's from The Frogs by Stephen Sondheim. It's a musical based on the original Greek comedy by Aristophanes and it's pretty funny, but not well known. Basically, it was performed once at Yale's swimming pool, and then later there was a CD of it (it's really good, I highly recommend it), and that's it.
I really like Rent, even though it's nothing like your typical Broadway musical. It's kinda funny; I started listening to showtunes because I didn't like most popular music and rock, and now I'm in love with rock musicals like Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Where are you going to college? What are you going to study? I hope you enjoy it as much as I am! (And don't worry, I've discovered that colleges like to give money to large groups of people who want to experience culture. So find a club (or start one) for musical theater, and you can probably get the college to fund lots of trips to the theater!) Good luck!
I might get to see Phantom when I get home for winter break! I'm happy!

nada Posted Nov 18, 2003
Oh, The Phantom! I am sooo jealous!(I wonder if they have a smiley for that?)
Oh, You're so lucky!!!
And "Traveling Music" sounds wonderful, I shall definately look it up!
That's the same with me, I can't stand modern music (for the most part) so I turn to happy alternatives(Show tunes, Simon and Garfunkel, Weird Al, Seasonal music, big band era, and other very uncommon items..)And, I entirely prefer them!
I wanted to go to my dream college, St. John's (in Maryland or Sante Fe) but it costs entirely too much..So, I will probably have to go to a local school, because Oklahoma colleges are the cheapest colleges (mainly because no one wants to be here!) I want to go back to the East coast(which is where I'm origionally from) but as mentioned, colleges are more expensives and it's to late for me to apply for scholarships or even for classes(because I'm determined to begin in the January semester...) Maybe later, i can transfer somewhere else, though? hmmm....anyway...
I haven't a clue what I want to major in, I just intend to go to some liberal arts college somewhere and get a degree in something. you see, I have a problem with decisions, and I'm definately having way too much trouble trying to pick a major. How can I pick just one thing? There are so many things I love, and I don't have a clue what I want to be! Ugh!
Oh, I do hope where ever I end up will provide money for my excursions, that wound be great!Oh joy!
Have a great time at Phantom of The Opera!!!

I know a good college for you: Union College (that's where I go). Small, liberal arts and engineering college, likes students with a wide range of interests. (One of my friends has changed her major several times already in the first term!)
Oh, it just so happens that that friend is the same friend with whom I went to see a very wonderful musical in October: Jane Eyre. I discovered this neat little theater a little distance away from Union that did Jane Eyre and it was amazing. I don't know about you, but I'm a hopeless romantic about musicals and I now want to read the book (previously I had no interest in literature of that era). Apparently Jane Eyre opened on Broadway in the same season as The Producers, so even though it was nominated for the Tony for Best Musical, it didn't win anything or run very long because The Producers swept everything. (Don't mind me, I have a bad habit of dispensing liberal doses of Broadway trivia at random moments. Try not to encourage me.)

nada Posted Nov 18, 2003
To not encourage you would be highly impossible for me, for I love theatre and trivia, so do continue!
I didn't know Jane Eyre was turned into a musical!!!(I've read the book..I read almost everything I can get my hands on.)
I usually will deny it, but I too am a hopless romantic at heart...(when it comes to musicals and novels and such) Ohy!
I have to admit, your college does sound like what I'm looking for: Small, liberal arts, New york, nice theatre right by... Union you, say? I must look it up. I hope it's not horribly expensive....I shall soon find out
*looking it up*
I wonder if they would let me apply this late and still enter in Jauary? Or transfer in fall? Or what not? (Still haven't looked at info about college yet.)
*going to look now*
thanks!

Actually, Union has an unusual schedule because it's on a trimester system. So the fall term is just ending, the winter term starts at the beginning of January, and the spring term starts in…trying to think…April? Yeah, sounds right. I don't know how course transfers work out, but it's probably not too difficult. I know it's just an idea, and one of many colleges that would probably suit you, but if you ever want to visit Union, let me know…
Oh yeah, in addition to the small theater, there's also a very large, very old, very fancy-schmancy theater called Proctor's Theater which gets touring productions and stuff, also very close by. And Union is home to Mountebanks, which is one of the oldest college theater troups in the country (but if you know theater people, you know that that doesn't necessarily mean much; we're still just a bunch of people goofing off and having fun, and occasionally putting on shows when we feel like it. It's all very informal.) Union doesn't have an actual musical theater department, but it does have a theater department.
Okay, I'll stop advertising my college. I sound like one of those college admissions people who come to your high school and show you slides and talk about how it's a great learning opportunity and a chance to expand your horizons, etc. Shutting up now.
Well, wherever you decide to go to college, good luck in your decision. I'm sure there's a song here. Hmmm…"Move on, stop worrying where you're going, move on." Well, not really the right mindset in this case, but it's a cool song anyway. (Sunday in the Park with George) Aha! "You try my patience. Make your choice!" (the Phantom speaking to Christine). Still not the quote I'm looking for, but if I go through every song I've ever heard, I won't get this posted, so I'll post this now.

Aaaaahhhhhh!!!!! I hate these little teeny tiny windows where you type what you're going to say. I always think I'm writing a little paragraph, and it turns out to be a whole novel! I feel like h2g2 is encouraging me in my long-windedness! Aaarrgghh!

Oh, that's perfect! (Speaking of the trimeseter system!) You see, if I want to go to a good college it's too late to apply now and start in January, and I can't see waiting till September...but May's not bad at all.
Yes, the weird local school I'm not fond of was a trimeseter too, probably one of the few good things about it!(Can you tell I don't want to go there?)
If you think you sound like an avertising agent, you should have seen me speak about St. John's! (Me and my friend went on a cross-country trip by train, and EVERYTIME we met someone new I'd hand them a brochure(s), and talk as long as they'd let me about St. John's...)
Hmmm...it could work.
*investigation*
Giggle, I hear a lot of lines right now..but none of them really fit the mood....Oh well, next time!

I'm happy! I just got the DVD of Sunday in the Park with George from the library (I love the soundtrack, but I've never seen it) and watched it, and it was sooo good. (See, I'm into art, among other things, and Sunday is all about how artists remake their world, so naturally I'm entranced.) It was beautiful! I'm going to be singing "Sunday" for days now. (If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

I haven't , but I definately will!
(I love art as well, so I shall take your glowing recommendation to heart! Thanks!)
