What a clumsy idiot!
Posted Apr 2, 2007
Monday 2nd April 2007.
Yesterday I got the firght of my life.
I was making my breakfast and boiling a pan of water on the hob. I do not have a kettle because they fur up so quickly in thie water we have.
I absentmindedly placed the pot back on the nob and
Oops!,scalding water poured over my left hand.I was not looking where I had placed it and so it was at an angle and capsized over my left hand. I had also not bothered to stand up in my wheelchair in order to do it.
It is the first burn that I have ever experienced. It was very painful. Fortunately I was right next to the sink so held my hand under the running tap of cold water for at least 15 minutes. Again I cannot express the pain I felt. I kept chastising myself.
"Idiote"!
"Imbecile"!
(I shall not go any furter in my choise of French words denoting what a fool I was.
I spent an unpleasant hour and a half hoping against hope that the pain I was feeling did not mean that I had done something irreparable to my left hand.
Finally I phoned the NHS Helpline. A calm. reassuring voice answered me. She asked me questions and when she realised that I was on my own was even more compassionate.
She advised me to go to the local A & E and found out where the closest one to us was. She also advised me to place clingfilm round my left hand in order to cover it completely. This was of immenses solace to me and funnily enough did ease the pain - as well as to keep the burn clean until one can get to hospital.
I phoned K. up and together we went to the hospital. He was, as was to be expected, very upset about it.
Anyway, I spent a funny day. The phone did not ring once. I did not want to disturb my friends, and I could not even write and tell you all about it as my hand was sore. Anyway. I spent an afternoon watching the most wonderful film on Winston Churchill - The Young Churchill.
Today I am going back to A and E. I expect that it is going to be alright - I believe that the fact that I was right next to cold water really helped me although it was incredilbly painful. I also moved my fingers and hand continually until I phoned the NHS. Incidentally I am right handed so that is a blessing.
But wat a clumsy ass I am. I know that I drop things very easily. But to pour boiling water over one. Really. That is going too far.
Idiot.....!!!!!!
Pensively thinking
I suppose that I must consider moving into a setting where I would not be so alone.
But wjat about my role as carer?
Oh dear.
A reflective, but fortunately hot too badly burnt

Yesterday was my lovely day

Friday 30th March 2007
Yesterday K. and I left early to go to London. The Art college he attends had arranged an excursion to the V.and A. to view the exhibition on surrealism which is on. I had thought that there was an exhibition on Monet - which turned out to be at the Royal Academy.!!
Fortunately the staff took me in hand!!, I enquired where I could travel in my wheelchair and it appears that practically everywhere in the V and A is wheelchair friendly.
What a wonderful two hours I had. I was directed to the Muslim works of art and advised to wait until the "lights" cam on when I could view this most wonderful carpet.
It was out of this world - and I sat and looked at it and wondered about the tiny little fingers that had knotted over 200 knots per square inch whilst they were making it. I hope that I might be able to write an entry on it. I found it so fascinating. As well as the marvellous Muslim exhibition I managed to wheel myself to part of the sculptures and was thrilled to find several Rodin. I remember reading his life years ago. And here was I stroking his marvellous sculptures which he, the Great Master. had chiselled out of marble. I was deeply moved by this.
My grandson and his lovely Greek birldfriend came and joined us and then I took them all out to lunch to a Thai restaurant in South Kensington.
That too was lovely and I got to know J.'s most super girl friend. She is a fascinating person and lovely and charming and caring. She has a wonderfully interesting job as well.
I was dead beat when I came back and fell asleep in my chair for over an hour.
But it really was a perfect day. Surrounded by family who love me and doing wonderful things in a most marvellous facility which I have now joined, and where I hope to spend a great many happy hours. About the only thing that accomodates oldies like me.They apparently even have concerts given by the students of various Colleges of Music.

The great advantage of being an ancient Mother, is that, on the whole, one's children remember the day - even if they cannot share it with you.
Phone calls from South Africa started the run. that was great, and I was so pleased to get up to date with all their news. They are off to their ranch on the confluence of the Limpopo/Sashi river in Botswana next weekend. They are flying up which will be nice for them.
Then a ring at the door, and a young man arrived with the most beautiful white orchid , packed impeccably and quite beautifully pristine. My eldest son M. was flying off to Sweden for a conference, and he phoned from the airport. I was at Mass, but he left a very loving message which made me feel good.
K. and I went shopping and planned the menu.
We deicded to start with
Oysters
Roast duck
plus veggies,
Beautiful puddings.
Champagne.
We did ourselves proud.
K. arrived this morning with a most beautiful card with a message on it which was so exquisitly beautiful that I burst into tears immediately. Never let it be said that we are not appreciated.
Also a very beautiful bar of sugar free chocolate.
I went to 11 15 Mass, and then it was that the sad part of the day started. My friend who takes me to Mass had lost her son in tragic circustances and as my cousin, who ives in Aix-en-Provence had been speaking to me this morning about the loss of her son, the two deaths sudeenly began to impinge and I realised how icnredibly lucky I am to have the joy of my son.
I hope that I was of some comfort to both my cousin and my friend. I certainly can understand their grief at losing a child which seems to me to be quite the most devastating loss any parent can feel.
Anyway, we sat down to our wonderful lunch at 4 p.m. K. opened the dozen oysters from Scotland beautifully,. They really are excellent and I much prefer them to the Whitstable ones. We just had them with some lovely fresh lemon. And there is something in oysters which makes me feel wonderful the next day, so I am hoping to wake up tomorrow morning feeling totally recovered from the recent problems.
The rest of the meal was very good and the Champagne. although not of a "known" brand, was cold, sparkling and made us both feel good.
All in all, a really super day.
I am very blessed.
With much and bonsoir mes amis
Christiane
