Yes fine, in Tarantino films black people call each other n**gah and motherf**kah all the time. So?
Della is not black. And she intended the term to insult another researcher, a black man (well, coffee-brown man anyhow). Then she said she had no idea that the term was racist. Well duh. I don't understand why people here on a public forum feel a need to personally insult each other, but at least they should have the sense to know the meaning of the insulting words they are using. Or at least if they have found they were mistaken to simply apologize rather than turn their mistake into everyone else's problem.
But that is just my humble opinion. As far as I know, this is a dead issue between blicky and Della now.

yeah, but the word does not imply that it's target is white, but that it's target is pretending to be something that they clearly aren't.

Well, basically this is an old thread that I forgot to unsubscribe from, so I'm doing it now.

"the word does not imply that it's target is white"
In 1991 or so, the lead singer of Guns and Roses tried the same pathetic bit of whining to try to excuse his use of the word "n*****s" in a song lyric. He said it didn't necessarily mean *black* people. He was about as convincing as you are.
Like I said, if you can't see why it is a racist term, I can't help you.

we'll have to agree to disagree, then. i've made my point, which i feel i had to make, but i can't help feeling that you may be a bit too P.C.
and before you accuse me, i'm not racist myself. far from it. i believe that we all bleed red and that's the only colour that matters.

Very true, Mycelium.
What you are missing out is the wofd is derived from the words *white* and *n*****r* and was used by racists as a term of abuse for those white people they saw as being to close to (as they see it) inferior black culture and people. When you understand the original context.
Moreover how can anybody be *too PC*?
Do you really begrudge anyone fair and accurate terms of address?
Is it too much trouble to change the way we use language slightly to avoid being derogatory?
Do you call people with glasses Mr Magoo or women bitches?
Most people make some effort to use the right words and be polite, thus showing others some respect and acknowledging their right not to be verbally abused. This is the *correct* way of communicating. If you dont think this is important then try this entry.

that story kind of illustrates what i mean by "too PC". by seeing a difference and saying there's a difference the perception that there is a difference is developed, when there isn't a difference.
i suppose i'm just saying that it's alright to take off the kid-gloves.
i've only ever heard 'wigger' used in a mocking way as opposed to a vindictive way, with the emphasis on the pretension. i've never heard it said with venom. i guess i'm lucky not to have been exposed to such racism growing up as i did in bridgend.
i'm backing up della's use of the word as not being racist

Thats cool, I never said she used it in a racist way I was telling her that it is a racist term though. It clearly is used by some people as a synonnym for wannabe in a generic way, but that does nothing to allay the offense intended by its original meaning though.
Bridgend aint Brimingham bra, trust me. If you used that kind of language round here it wouldnt go down too well.
Like you little site.

Well yeah, thats the whole point, why cant we let everyone be what they want to be without deriding them or getting on their cases. I think its cool you do what you do, I if works for you that's safe, but a next man wants to say "No your this and your that". Why?
The story is about giving people an even break and how the attitude and words you use about people can be just as damaging as legal or physical things you use against people.
