Forgive me for posting here.

I tend to leap before I look...

Missus and I had Lady for eleven years. She was six when we got her...

A more obedient dog you could not wish for. On walks she was leadless..She would not approach another dog witout our say so.

The only time she had a lead was when it was the law to; ie, on a bus.

It was truly heartbreaking when the vet told us she had acute and irreversible kidney failure....

I also apologise if it seemed that I was having a pop at you.

Its heartbreaking to have to make a decision like that, especially when its an animal as much loved as Lady clearly is. She obviously had a very happy life with you and a good long life at that! Its easy for me to say but she'll always be with you. The only time something really dies is when the last person forgets so she will always live in your heart and memories and photos.

I had a cat who we got when I was 6 months old, he was 8 weeks, he grew up with me and was more like a dog. He protected me, got in the middle of any squabbles I had with my friends and once even attacked paramedics who were trying to take me to hospital.
He was the greatest cat I've ever known and sadly died at age 21. Was the 2nd most painful experience of my life and while I have animals now, I've never been as close to them as I was with him. He was my best friend and even now, almost a decade later, it still hurts to not have him around and just thinking about him brings a huge lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

Lady is at least at peace and not having to suffer the effects of kidney failure. It's not easy to lose a furry family member and I believe is harder if you have to make the decision as to when they go but, and it is a cliche, sometimes it is the best thing for them even though it rips your heart out. Thats how you know a good owner, they're the ones that do right by their pets, regardless of how painful it is for them.

I sometimes think it's easier to lose a human. At least others understand and are somewhat respectful.
When I lost my cat I was understandably upset and almost ripped the head off of some inconsiderate who told me in no uncertain terms; "it's only a cat". I did however crack a knuckle and break a couple of fingers when my punch hit a wall rather than this who was dragged to the side by my mother who knew what would happen! She then proceeded to, shall we say, 'remove' the person from the house.

There are a few places that do nice memorial stones, or maybe planting a rose called Lady.
We had the cat, Smartie, cremated and now we put those stick on ribbon things you get on presents on his casket, since he'd always wear one on Christmas Day and not shake or pull it off so now, we stick one on his casket and when he's done, he shakes it off. I can only assume thats what happens since the cats I have now hate them and avoid them, I never remove them, they dont fall off but he's never worn the same one for 2 years running, they just vanish at some point in the year.
