Something that i noticed you posted on the "Russian Siege" thread, but I didn't want to drag that off-topic by asking there:
"When Carl Sagan set out to write a history of WWII, he found himself inextricably drawn to WWI for the causes, and then back to the Franco-German war and the Seige of Paris, and then back to Napoleon. Eventually he wrote a history of the planet, from the formation of the solar system onwards, with no special treatment of WWII."
What was the book called? it sounds interesting, and I'd like to read it sometime.

"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" - it is an amazing book, and like all of the books of his which I have read, it has altered how I see the world.
It appears to be out of print, but Amazon has one second hand reseller with a copy:
