Nice going sticking up for Crowley. Just finishing my Goddess-knows-how-manieth read of Sutin's Biog, and even if he was a bit of a fruitloop, he does get a bad rap from people who don't read further than the sensationalist headlines and shock-me-cos-I-love-it stories. I'm no Thelemite (too much Egyptology and poo-eating for this poor Wiccan), but the guy had talent, even if it was just for making trouble and pissing off all the right (or wrong, depending on if he was after a visa at the time!) people. And his climbing is HIGHLY underrated. He held the world altitude record on K2 for years, and without oxygen. So yeah, nice work matey!

is that Zep album reveiw thing still an idea?

thankyou... I have the biog. titled 'A Magic Life', it's very good if not as comprehensive as others- said to be good for newbies, anyway. I knew next to nowt about Crowley- the climbing came as a big surprise- before reading it, but I never believed all the rubbish about him in any case; natural suspicion of daft headlines, maybe. Besides, I had his tarot deck (it was the cheapest one in the shop ) so I owed him some token research at least. Yes, I think he was a multitalented individual. I can empathise with his shocking behaviour in that, he did the slightest thing 'wrong' and respectable society has a fit, so why not take them for all they're worth? he got his money's worth, it's just a shame that today he is mostly misremembered as a 'Satanist' layabout.
He turned up in the list of Greatest Britons- this was commented on as being 'sarcastic', but I don't know. The K2 record in particular would be something the jingoists could go nuts about.
I must make a visit to Leamington Spa one of these days...

You're right about him getting his money's worth, but it is a bit of a shame he died broke and lonely. poor bloke. heroin didn't help, but there you go! If you want to collaborate, I'm up for it! As I said, the Sutin biog is probably the fairest I know of - it doesn't deify the guy, but doesn't take the sensationalist tabloid angle either. The links with Jimmy Page are interesting, but ol' Mick also got a bit nosey: a friend of mine was outbid at auction for one of Al's walking sticks by a certain Mr Jagger...

Broke and lonely, but suprisingly old considering the odds.
I'll see if I can get the Sutin book; I am rereading Booth's biog. which also stays away from tabloid-muck and does a fair job of evaluating how much of his grandiose claims were actually, to some degree, true.
I wouldn't know exactly what to put in an entry, apart from not making it a basic life-story and maybe not overly discursive of the magick? Personally I am more interested in the man, than his theology, and in any case don't know enough about it.

fair comment. I think it would be interesting to do a bit of a brief biog then maybe a "true/false" section. call it myth-explosion. you are right about the theology aspect - Thelema is a very complicated and confused belief system, and could be an instant turn off for a lot of folks. that and the fact that Crowley spent a long time saying that he didn't agree with it himself!

i'll keep thinking about it!
