Did you take them? I would have! Sounds to me like you had a good use for the; the environment would not have been damaged; there was almost no chance of any trouble coming form it.
I cant get into the deeper ethical/moral aspects; don't think they're appropriate!

Wow, there has been so much interest in the roses!
The ones in question were short-lived and they have now all fallen off the bush. However there are plenty more so I will probably get some of those (they are more common.)
As for the mead, I made lavender flavour instead and put in some legally-acquired rose petals from our garden. I am sure it will taste lovely, if somewhat girlie.
