This journal entry is dedicated to a person I knew only for a short while working with on some project called the United Nations International Student Conference of Amsterdam (UNISCA).
One good trait of this Ozzie bloke was that he got me back into appreciating pot, something I had turned away from until recently.
Another was that he has very high ambitions in life, being a politician and all, but displayed a surprising amount of humbleness as well.
Had many conversations.
One of them was about what his final ambition was, the real thing, not what you tell everyone (big house, car, babe and beanbags), but what you keep to yourself. His turned out like this: It wasn't in the realm of politics at all. All he really wanted was to buy a farm somewhere in the more fertile part of Australia, and plant lots of trees. If possible, he added, they would be fruit trees.
Why fruit trees? Do you like fruit?
Not particularly, he said, but fruit trees attract birds. I like birds.
And there you have it folks. With all his well thought over political campaigning, and the plans and the lobbying and networking, ALP and Liberals and parliament... All he wanted was to attract birds.
I liked that.
