Lost Saturday

Friday 30.06.99 Invited friends round this evening to celebrate my second year of retirement and to show off my culinary skills. TLK (the lovely Kimmie) is late home from work … she drives over to the other side of town to collect some friends who will taxi home in the early hours. Meal went down well as did several bottles of wine a fun parlour game, music and half a bottle of whiskey. Friends went home about 2:00 AM.

Saturday 01.06.99 Awoke on the sofa surrounded by little strips of paper with famous names written on them. Must have had something to do with the parlour game. BB (Billy Bracken … our dog) was asleep on another sofa, TLK (very sensibly) had made it to bed. It was 6.30 AM and for absolutely no good reason decided to go down to the beach with BB. It was incredibly warm for an English Coastal town at that time of day. Having made the beach I decided it was time to rest my weary body. Warm sand, warm air, the gentle sound of the waves lapping the beach ... fast asleep in no time. Awoke for the second time today with a dog digging a large hole in the sand just under my left ear. Realising that the world was rotating faster than normal I thought it prudent to seek the sanctuary of my own home. An uneasy journey was made up hill. The rest of the day was written off … drifting in and out of consciousness whilst trying to watch the tennis at Wimbledon and the cricket from Edgbaston. Consumption of copious quantities of fruit juice, mineral water and diet Coke eventually won the day.
TLK, bless her and all who love her, made it to a book shop and bought me a copy of “Driving over Lemons”. I took to my bed very early and had a thoroughly good read.

Sunday 02.06.99 Feeling almost well again. Still slightly shell shocked from yesterday. Took to the roads in the Honda to buy the Observer … tea and chocolate biscuits in bed with the Sunday Newspaper. I don’t usually eat chocolate biscuits but I felt I still needed to build up my sugar levels after the excesses of Friday night. After a yummy cooked breakfast, I didn’t eat much yesterday for some reason, TLK and I took BB for a walk along the beach. Arrived home slightly wetter than the dog … he went swimming, I just got very hot. Time for a cold shower and a couple of hours of concerted effort on the crossword.
