h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Here's a thought I've been thinking recently, what if we set out to build h2g2 from scratch now? What would it be like?

This is actually really difficult because a lot of the internet is based on h2g2. Even if in only a small way. So you can't think "we'd take this idea from here..." because they may well not have been here.

But that aside, if we were to start from scratch, what would it be like?

I cannot imagine this.

But, as I was just explaining to Elektra why her links weren't showing up on the sidebar, it occurred to me how brilliantly user-friendly h2g2 is.

Okay, Elektra and PR amounts to destructive testing, but still...

Would it be lil proof?

What would be the fun if it were lilproof?

We'd basically end up with a cookie-cutter Wiki site, I think.

It depends whether we have someone with a vision of what h2g2 can be.

I do wonder if we'd've ended up with something more akin to Wikipedia. I always felt that that kind of idea was closer to what TDV really wanted, only they were sort of hampered by the technology. On the other hand, we'd lose PR, which I would hate.

That'd be tragic. PR's one of the biggest strengths of the site IMHO - engaged, impartial feedback is hard to come by on the web.

I'm getting to grips with PR, I've never really had anything to do with it believe it or not. But I have to say that having it there as a quality control is an absolutely deity send. It's what makes this site stand out from the dross.

We're gonna build a whole new world for ourselves...
