ok, here we go, here's the easy way to get smiley's (and fish). Use the symbols shown below to get the relevant smiley, but make sure there are no spaces between them

You only have to use the HTML version on certain parts of H2G2

that was my problem. spaces. thank-you. i wonder how many people are driving others nuts with this same problem. i think they just need to add the answer to the smiley face question to everyones homepage when they first register. would save a lot of time. ha ha

I've now found four separate conversations about this very issue. I can only seem to get the smiley smiley working and then only if it sits at the start of a new line. I am most confused.

i am most confused myself, what you are doing to get the smiley face on a new line should be working on the same line as well and the symbols listed above should work just like the smiley face. i wish i could be of some help but i do not know what to tell you. sorry

Ok, so now the situation has change. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Life is VERY strange.

life is far too odd for me to take any notice of it, but as for your smiley problem, I'm not exactly sure, you'll have to give me more details of what your doing...

Ah, that works too. Oh I don't know. If you ask me people are going a bit mad with this smiley thing anyway!

monshari, if you will re-register as monshari on your work computer, you should be able to come in as yourself. just place your re-registration page in favorite places and use it, depending on whether you're at home, or at work, to access your user page.

i tried that and it kept sending it to my home computer that is why i set the other one up. normally i just sign on with my home screen name but tamara was online so i had to use my work screen name instead that is why it did not work to use my monshari name.

When I first started I too had to start a new line, but they did all work. If I didn't it copied the text in front of the and put it behind as well, most frustrating. It seems to have cleared up now so maybe they fixed it. I've also noticed the IE and netscape handle H2G2 differently, IE can't edit pages with pictures and Net has this stupidly long edit box for the forums.
