Bonanza!
Posted Oct 7, 2002
Out of curiosity, I did an "add channels" on my Service-Formerly-Known-As-ITV-Digital box.
26 new channels!
As soon as any of them stop being blank and silent, I'll let you know...

I continue to fear for the sanity of my mother.

She has taken to sprinkling curry powder around the garden in an attempt to keep cats at bay. As a result, the garden now stinks to high heaven of curry, and all the cats in the district have formed a queue, thinking they're about to be fed.

Darkness.

I don't know what's happening to the planet. Ever since the end of June it seems to get dark earlier every day.

Another day, another Euro.

Isn't that just ruddy typical? Here I am with two guide entries on the go, not to mention the Top 40 Lottery (that's the Top 40 Lottery at A829235 - tickets still available), and suddenly I find myself with two weeks' worth of real life work to contend with!
Starting tomorrow!
Don't these people realise how busy I am? I really must speak to my agent. *wanders off, muttering*

So there I was a-thinkin', as I am wont to do, that all pop music these days is unutterably awful, not like it was in the glory days of the 1980s, when summers were long and ran from June to September, not August to November like they do now. And as the 2000th edition of Top Of The Pops drew ever nearer, I expected it to confirm my cynical viewpoint. After all, what single did the British public see fit to buy most copies of in this momentous week? Atomic Kitten's unnecessary remake of "The Tide Is High". It didn't bode well.
But.
As events unfolded, my mind wandered back to that magical evening in 1983 when the young, goggle-eyed E Vibenstein sat in front of the television, dutifully preserving the 1000th edition of Top Of The Pops onto audio cassette via the built-in microphone of his radio/cassette recorder. Such happy days. And what was number one then?
Oh. "True" by Spandau Ballet.
This was the exact moment that the truth (no pun intended) ("None taken" - the readers) was revealed to me. Pop music was never all good; it has always been partially good and partially rubbish. We just lose the ability to focus on the good stuff as we get older.
I seem to have rambled. Apologies. But next time you hear Atomic Kitten, count your blessings - they could be Spandau Ballet.
