I posted on the front page about smacking children, got one response ,some people live in a dream world!I say Dr. Spock has a lot to answer for with his freedom of expression,as I say on the post 'hard enough and low enough!!
No!I was never that bad,I grew up in England ,did 4yrs in the WRAF and we used to go out and have a few drinks but were always pretty well behaved!
Enough ranting from me for now. Cheers!smiley - cheers

I sometimes think that the current crop of hooligans are the result of parent guilt. The parents, when the children were little, were too busy working to spend time with the children; so they tried to compensate with various indulgences and, most importantly of all, no discipline.

Of course our drinking culture doesn't help either. You know the drill "C'mon, drink up, what are you? A sissy or something?"

What disturbs me is the growth of the "ladette" - why do young girls think that getting drunk makes the attractive? smiley - huh

Combine all that with the lack of general good manners and respect (in adults as well as children) and, really, it shouldn't be a surprise.

Good evening! How was your day? Very quiet here as there were more hoons about last night.Heaven knows what they get out of it,ego tripping I guess.Dr. Spock has a lot to answer for, with his " let them do what they wan" attitude,as I said before, bring back flogging!!
Had to call the cops twice and they came out twice, stopped the loud music but not the yelling and swearing!
So,how was your day ?! I hope better than mine! smiley - wah

Back again and late ,as usual!Yes!They were his last words, they will probably be mine too!
Funny country Oz!Take a murdering, horse stealing, bank robbing bandit for a national hero!!No wonder things are going down hill!
There was a piece in the local rag about how we should be honouring the memory of a Tom something or other ,he was a brave soul who did something that should be remembered(but obviously isn't!)regarding the capture of said Ned Kelly.
Oh!Well,I;ll hop off my soap box now!smiley - cheers

Not only here! Was just looking at the replies to the London Olympics, talk about put yourself down. What has happened to a bit of pride in your country?
Is it the fact that 'multiculturalism' has removed national pride?Or am I percieved as being racist?>smiley - erm

smiley - sorry Not sure what you mean smiley - huh

I'm not a great believer in "national pride". I'm proud of my country's achievements but not to the point of "My country right or wrong."

I agree that we Aussies are a little too quick to follow other countries rather than lead the way but I would hate for us to be as one-eyed as some Americans.

I love the way multiculturalism has enriched Australia smiley - biggrin

auspony calling!

Post 16

auspony

Hmm!Yes I guess it did come across as a bit racist, sorry about that.
No!I would hate to become more Americanised than we are, tho' in the current climate maybe we will see they are not the be all and end all of everything! At least they knocked back Kath & Kim,so some of them have some taste!!
Yes,culture from different countries is good in some ways but I ,personally think that when you adopt a country, you adopt their way of life.Do you think that some ethnic people tend to stay too much with their own ?Suppose if you have to learn the language ,it would be really hard.No way I could learn Russian ,for example!!
Too much thinking for me tonight,I'm off to bed !!smiley - cheers

"Do you think that some ethnic people tend to stay too much with their own ?"

As it has always been ... first generation immigrants tend to stay with their own for security but a high percentage of second generation immigrants marry Australians and, by the third generation they are mostly Aussie smiley - biggrin (Australians are the same when they migrate - think Kangaroo Valley in London)

It was that way with in the 50s too - remember the waves of European migrants (my Mum was one of them) and all those wonderful Greeks and Italians who gave us milk bars, coffee shops and yummy restaurants.

Could get in to scary territory here!Yes!The lovely Greek and Italian restaurants and coffee shops ,one thing that is common to all is their religious beliefs, all Christian, whatever branch,or possibly Jewish.
Now, I'm not of a religious bent at all, have had a bit of experience with several.Father was Jewish, mother C of E,married(first time)to a Catholic ,so changed to that.Second time same, so still a very lapsed Catholic,I find they are all much of a muchness! All believe in God.
Not since the Crusades have we seen so much trouble with Christian and Islam.
This is all getting too deep for me !Off to bed again!smiley - wah

I have a niece who went to a school that had about 20 different nationalities and religions of all kinds. I remember once, when she was little, we were looking at her school photo. I pointed to a lovely looking young boy (obviously not of European descent) and asked "Where is he from?" She gave me a strange look and said "Australia - but his parents come from Yemen."

The point is that she had accepted that, although they were all different, her friends were all the same. It taught me something.

Now that she is 20 her friends are still from all sorts of backgrounds, her current boyfriend is a student in microbiology who works part time with his parents in a home for children with special needs. He is also from an Egyptian Muslim background but it was a long time before I found this out - not because she didn't want to tell me, but because it just wasn't important to her - his study and work were just more interesting smiley - biggrin

The point of all this is that people are only "strange" when they are strangers. When you know them and accept them for WHO they are rather than WHAT they are you realise that, really, we all want the same stuff; a peaceful, good life and happiness smiley - biggrin

Yes, there are radicals, but there are as many dangerous Christians or Europeans out there as there are Muslims or non-Europeans.

I avoid the strident fundamentalists no matter what they are pushing, religion, race, science or whatever ....

Got to agree with you on that! The Granddaughter goes to a Lutheran school and tho' they do have 'chapel' and sing hymns ,there are a lot of different kids. The school mainly teaches tolerance and sharing and caring.
If only the radicals would listen to their mothers,I'm sure they would be better off!!I give up,my ideology is try and do someone a good turn every day and smile .Life's too short to spoil it by fighting!!
Really off to my bed now!smiley - biggrin
