I always wondered where a Wumbweevil came from, now I know (nice bum too!). I came across your page when looking at the Scottish meet up conversation. I was hoping to go ( I have relatives in Glesca), but unfortunately I can't get away that weekend. Pain or what. I'm new to the guide, and hope to have some fun with it. I hope it's not bad form to want to meet others so soon after signing up. I'm trying to think what I could contribute, however, an entry for Dundee would not be rivetting.
I enjoyed your page. I will have to get some work in on mine.

I owe you an apology Wumbeevil, I spelt your name wrong. A twitchy finger must have found a key to press......

What?! How dare you? Dundee, the home of the mighty McGonagall, not rivetting? What other city has had such a profound effect on Scottish verse? What other city has inflicted Oor Wullie and The Broons on an unsuspecting public?
What's that? How many times have I been there? Let me see...
*takes off shoes and socks and starts to count*
Well I make it at least once, for half an hour on a grey rainy day 25 years ago. All I remember is a cobbled square. Did I miss anything?
I don't know if it's bad form or not. It's probably best to lurk around a thread for a while before posting just to get the 'feel' of it. You might get ignored, but usually they're a friendly bunch here even when they're arguing.
Ah well, that's another absent researcher we'll have to drink for.
Cheers!

I'm not saying Dundee is boring.....
It has to be said, that familiarity breeds contempt, and you have a damn good point there. The Mighty William Topaz MacGonagall did live here.I live about 10 minutes walk from Step Row, where he used to live! Only Spike Milligan and Ivor Cutler come close to his prose!
On a wet evening..... well now it's probably better now than it was 20 years ago (when I arrived), 25 years ago probably wasn't much different. Things are looking up I think!
I'll keep watching and listening, it does seem a very friendly place here. One of these days I may have something interesting to add.
Please do have a drink on my behalf next week. I will have one for you guys anyway!

It was Spike Milligan who first pointed me in the direction of the blessed McGonagall. Why his poetry isn't compulsory at school, I'll never know. Instead they hit us with Burns and Wilfred Owen when what every impressionable child needs is, "Dulce et Decorum est pro Tay Bridge Mori".
Has the mighty bard got a plaque on his house? And is Step Row a corruption of his audiences' screaming, "Stop Now"?
Ivor Cutler I heard of in the mid 70s I think, but I don't think I heard any of his stuff until the web came along. Well not that I remember anyway.
I found out a few hours ago that I'm going to miss out on a kid's birthday party because of this meet next Saturday. Phew! After a close escape like that one I definitely need a drink or five on your behalf.

Lordy, is it nearly September already! Sorry, I was going to reply to your last message and got waylaid before I went on holiday!
So,
a) Did you have a good time at the meet up?
b) Did your kids notice you weren't at the party? and
c) How many drinks did you all drink on absent friends behalf?
My Oz holiday was great, the only problem was, I realised that I am probably going to be older, free and single before too long. Ah well, deep breath, jump and hope for the best.
I'll keep an eye out for the next Scottish meet date. Maybe I'll get to that!
Currently thinking about editing my page. Time to get with the program, or into some sort of shape anyway.

Welcome back, you've got a lot of rain to catch up on.
Well the "older" I don't think many people can do much about, but is there something wrong with being free and single? I don't seem to remember hating it too much, and not remembering is usually a good sign for me.
A) Yes we spent all of it in one pub or another (including one with 50 beers). It was too late to go to the science centre by the time Peta & Mark arrived. How we managed to bribe air traffic control into that delay I'll never know.
B) Please don't use that 'YK' phrase, it makes me very nervous. Try "Your nephews and nieces" or "Those little s" instead....pleeeease.
C) Err lots I think . . . I blame the real Ginger Beer for the memory loss. It ended up I was the only Scottish researcher at the end of the Scottish meet, I felt there had to be one left so nominated myself, much to the disgust of Mark, Peta and Lost.

The next Scottish meet is likely to be on Friday 21st September in Glasgow, so probably isn't any use to you unless you know someone in Glasgow with room in their cardboard box (see Mini Meet thread, though it's not getting discussed much yet). You just missed a Thursday mini-one in Edinburgh last week which had more people than the July Saturday meet. There are pics if you follow the trail from "My Links"
There's one down in Alton Towers on probably 28/29/30 September...at least I hope it's that weekend as I spotted a Virgin ticket to Stoke at £9 return and couldn't resist.
There are also a few in Oz if you want to pop back, seeing as you're the globetrotting type.
There's a Scottish Researchers' page http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A599376 and about half seem to be from the East Coast so you might want to talk them into a Jute, Jam and Janx Spirit meet.
Getting things into shape just makes it seem all the worse when they fall apart.

Ta for the note about the Scottish Researcher's Group. I saw it on the front page when I logged on, and got in touch with Jamie to sign up. Apparently there is someone else in Dundee who has found the guide, and they've got in touch with me. It's a small world/internet.
I had a look at the photos, it looks like you had a good time, better than the *bleeps* party! Not sure I will be able to make the 21st september, I might have a friend visiting. I will keep an eye open for further developments.
More Anon, and mind how you go with the Ginger Beer!

As a PS.... there's nothing wrong with being older, free and single. It's just the realisation that I was wrong to try and salvage the relationship in the first place. Such is life. Older but no wiser!
It will be a difficult conversation when he gets back.
Ahhhhh, yes, rain....... I can see a lot of it just now. Boooooo.
