On the Road at Last

Last Wednesday, I was in my office with my new boss. It was his first day working in our unit in the jail. The sheriff walked in and said, "Sergeant, you've only been in here one day, and you're already running your people off." I don't think anyone knew what he was talking about. The sheriff finally got around to saying that one of the field deputies resigned, and I was going to replace him.

It was an incredible relief. I have been eating my heart out in the jail for a year waiting for a position on the road. I'm a street cop, and it's hard to go into a jail environment from the street.

I have learned some valuable lessons in the jail. My ability to read people is much improved, and I know our thug population much better than most of the police.

Today was my first day on the street. It wasn't terribly exciting, but it was nice to be out and about again.

Mom's Visit to North Georgia

My mom and her husband are in Georgia for a week. They're staying at a resort in Northeast Georgia. On Saturday night, they came by the house. Then we all went up to the resort. On Sunday, we started a whirlwind tour of some of the sites in our convertible.

We started out with breakfast and shopping at Helen [A535277], the cheesy north Georgia town dolled up to look like an alpine village. We picked up a sword for Bev's costume for DragonCon, and we stopped by the store with the CrossBeau Zither, although Ekim Beau wasn't there.

From there we headed up to the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee [http://www.georgia-mountain-fair.com/]. We shopped the craft stands.

Then we went to Tallulah Gorge [http://georgiastateparks.org/info.asp?id=46&linkval=tallulah&siteid=5] to look at the down at the waterfalls from the lip of the canyon. It's a quite a view. We went through the information center at the state park, and took in the view. Then we went around to the other side and took in the view from a cheesy roadside tourist trap.

To see some more waterfalls, we headed over to Toccoa Falls College [http://www.tfc.edu/] to see their picturesque waterfalls from below.

We went back to the resort and showed them some stuff on the map. Then we left Mom and Jim to take the two-hour drive back home.

On the Road Again

Tonight I'm working an extra job patrolling some parks. While I was driving from one park to another one, I stopped a car and the driver was suspended.

First stop after 9 months and it results in an arrest. I wish it had something to do with skill, but it was mostly luck. Then again, you make your own luck.

It is nice to get out in a patrol car again.

My Wife Left Me

Well, she's coming back. She went home to Ohio for a week, so I'm baching it. I'm not sure what to do.

She left yesterday while I was in class. I have a regular weekend off. I went to see Hollywood Homicide and went to the store to get paint and groceries. Woo-hoo!

It is nice to have some time by myself. I can do whatever I want, but it make me wonder what people who live by themselves do with their time. Then again, I guess they probably have friends and stuff. My circles of friends are fairly limited. I'm friendly with the guys at work. There's a guy with the police department who I'm really tight with. Then we have our couple friends. A friend of ours who we used to play D&D and his girlfriend. He's doing race and father's day stuff with his dad.

Someday I need to make some friends.

School Police

I completed my application for a position as a school resource officer. I've been thinking about this job for a long time. In 2000, I went through a Criminal Investigations course along with a sergeant from this agency. We talked, and he thought I'd fit in well with the agency. The only problem was my degree. Now that I have it, I'm ready to try my luck.

This would be a really nice job. The pay is excellent, since they pay for expiernece. When I talked to the guy back in 2000, they were paid on a teacher's scale, they had summers and holidays off, but they still earned overtime. Now they're paid on a different scale, and I'll make more than a teacher with the same amount of experience.

This would be a good job to get.
