Wildman - I'm not really mad, I've just been in a very bad mood for 40 years! Started conversation Jan 19, 2004
Hi, I'm currently Sub-editing 'Offices of the Inspector General' at A2082809
I'm afraid I got a bit carried away and changed your entry more than usual - but , it can be restored to your version if you want!
I'd be obliged if you could check what I've done and tell me what you think, perhaps between us we might reach a compromise.

I haven't looked at the thing for some time. It's not as good as I would have hoped. Here's two modifications I would make:
>They may also investigate criminal or civil matters.
To >>They investigate both criminal and civil matters.
>28 OIGs have special agents, trained investigators with the power of arrest and the authority to carry weapons. OIGs also usually provide security for the heads of their agency. Some OIGs are responsible for enforcing other laws that fall under the jurisdiction of their departments such as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) OIG...
To >>28 OIGs have special agents, who are law enforcement officers who carry weapons and have the power of arrest. The scope of most OIGs is generally fairly narrow, and it is limited to the fraud investigation. However, that responsibilty can reach further than one might expect. For instance, the Department of Agriculture OIG investigates welfare fraud and employs 217 agents.

The third paragraph still needs work. Here's my suggestion:
To >>28 OIGs have special agents, who are law enforcement officers who carry weapons and have the power of arrest. The scope of most OIGs is generally fairly narrow, and it is limited to the fraud investigation and executive protection for the head of their parent orginzation. However, that responsibilty can reach further than one might expect. For instance, the Department of Agriculture OIG investigates welfare fraud and employs 217 agents.
Some OIGs simply fulfill their traditional role, while another agency in that department performs the primary law enforcement role. In the United States Postal Service, the OIG investigates fraud against the service, while the US Postal Inspection Service investigates crimes that involve the mail.

It's still not art though.

Even Leonardo had the occasional off-day!
It may not be art, but it's informative! I'd never heard of OIGs before and I'm certain there are many more like me.
This may not be the most elegant prose you've submitted to the Guide, but I think it definitely deserves it's place there. Unless you can think of further changes you'd like to make, I'm quite happy to push it up the line.
