Dig the fish? How do you do that exactly without killing it? Maybe you mean you've buried it? It was still alive you monster!
Oh, whatever.

That's what I meant. It was a poor joke because I didn't have anything worthwhile to say. Now I'll say, ummm...
Carrot diseases: Purple mould, white mould, soft rot, hard rot and leathery innards. Do ya know any more vegiman?

Hi, Vegiman - I fell into the subtle trap on Hoopy Little Prefect Girl's page and found myself here... Looks like I'm late for the party, again...
btw, Is "Black Mould" a recognised carrot disease, or does that just happen in my 'fridge?

The 1 and only Elkherd Posted Aug 9, 1999
I've never seen it, but if it's not purple or white and its a mould it must count.
You must have a funny fridge for mould to grow in it. Can't be very cold.

Hi Thanks for dropping in.
Sorry I didn't get the joke Elk, must be tired. I did dig your fish but it got away swimmingly.
Hi Peet, Sorry you were dragged into the compost heap, it washes off!!!
The good old carrot. Yes when old, the carrot does suffer from black mould or if you are Americam 'mold'. It's a type of fungus and is a natural breaking down process to feed the surrounding earth, helping future carrots to grow.
This time of year (New Season carrots) are not so hardy as the later crop. Unless you are homophobic, the Rrench carrot lasts longer in the fridge at this time. If you buy British, make sure they have not been on the shop shelf too long. The air and heat make them turn quickly (see vegracks article). Buy them thick and large, the small thin ones will also turn quickly. British are better from September to April.
Here Endeth the lesson.
I will pop over to your pages soon, as you may well be aware, I am tied up (not literally Elk} with the fun run a lot.
Catch you soon (don't even think about it Elk)

It's probably my own fault - being financially challenged, I bought a supermarket "2 for 1" offer, with a short shelf-life. The carrots in question were polythene wrapped, and the second bag degenerated before I noticed. (Peeled 'em, pressure-cooked to sludge, then added chicken, sweetcorn & garlic to make a very good soup, though!)

You know your stuff, vegiman. You have now proved to me that you are a true veg man.
I shall avoid the crap puns from now on. Promise.
If you're going to buy polythene wrap carrots, then they're going to go rotten.
Is it true that if you leave carrots where some have previously rotted then the new carrots are, in turn, more likely to rot? I think its bunkum. See ya.

Plastic packaging is not always a bad thing. IF IT'S FRESH and not been in and out of a cold chain. Carrots sweat a lot and lose a lot of mosture, this of course dries them out and they rot quicker. That is why new season crops are not so hardy, they have thinner skins and lose more mosture. The plastic prevents this to some extent and the veg takes the mosture back in again.
Most carrots these days are hydro cooled (washed in freezing water) and from this time should be kept cold about 5 deg C. Unfortunately many wholesalers do not have temperature controled transport, so they get warm. Retailers then put them in cold rooms to store. Out they come again onto warm shelves and you buy them, take them home and put them in the fridge.
Many supermarkets are just as guilty of this, even if they have temperture controlled vehicles, they are left in warm places before being transfered to cold rooms. This means from the farm to the cooking pot, vegetables can be in and out of the cold as many as five times before you actually cook them.
I try as much as possible to buy from farms and get them to the customer within 24 hrs. Sometimes even the same day.
I have waffled enough - ask me about the carrots affecting other carrots another time, There is an element of truth in it and its all to do with gas.

Uh... surely freezing water is actually ice?
I live on carrots and apples. And Quorn and pizza and chips and homemade garlic mayo. And baked beans. They make me fart.

Hi Vegiman, I was told to check out your page and say Hi.
When they call you Vegiman..is it because you are vegetarian, or is it because you sell vegetables??
Anyway, I have found your pages to be great and I will, if you will have me, be back.

I was here again.
I don't know what vegiman thinks, but I'd say we should encourage the devouring of baby carrots. They're sweet.

We interrupt this fine forum to make an announcement.
Solemn music.
I have been made redundant!!! That's the good news.
The even better news is by reading my redundancy yarn their is a chance (I am not making this up) of being rewarded with free alcohol.
The article is just above the good house keeping advice on killing cockroaches. I felt it was appropriate.
Last one there is a rotton egg.

Sorry I have been so slow answering lately. Most of you know why - keeping track of the Fun Run, work and lack of sleep.
I have taken time to read everyones postings but just got a few minutes to reply today.
I will continue the carrot saga Saphire if you really want it, but not just now.
Elk - I heard you like them young and sweet, now I have heard it from the Elks mouth, I believe it.
Looney I will pop over soon I promise, but how you are going to get a drink to me over the net cables, beats me. Wont it make the the servers comp a bit soggy.
Last but not least Maid Marion, I will pop over to see your page soon and maybe leave my mark. Be careful though the way you signed off, Elk could have twisted your words, he loves doing this.
I am now officially closing this forum as like the first its getting to long and takes an age to download.
The new forum
Have you Been Here 3
will be from now on the only one I will answer.
it is at
