Sub-editing Roman Arches

Gnomon - time to move on

Hi Bob.

I'm sub-editing your "Roman Arches" entry at A61428873. Most of it is fine, but one thing I don't understand is your description of a "Missionary Band". Can you explain to me what this is. Use as many words as you like, and I'll summarise it.

Here's a picture my daughter took of the Pont-du-Gard. If there's a missionary band there, you can point it out to me.

The Entry now says:

"The piers are often braced with a stretch of masonry known as a travertine rib or missionary band5 which helps protect against sideways movement caused by pressure from the arches above."

with the footnote on band:

"5 This is a course of a different type of stone which protrudes slightly at the sides. It stabilises the top of the pier, and provides a foundation to the arch."

Is this acceptable?
