Hi bob
We met briefly in Pudding.
You seem to be a great man for doing entries - fair play!
As you're Kentcentric, would you have time to offer me a few facts about Reculver (castle)? Its local to me, and all I know about it is that it was possibly a Roman Lookout post. But there's a surprising amount of it, considering its so old, and I'm curious.
Also, as you're Kencentric, and *almost a Thanet man, I believe Mazin'MadFiddler is organizing a Thanet Mini meet of other Thanites sometime in the next couple of months, if you're interested? It usually involves alcohol and slagging off Roymondo, generally speaking, so the more the merrier, I guess.

Hi Evadne Cake
Ok briefly
Reculver (built 1st centurt) one of a set of Roman forts the were dotted along the coast. with its twin Richborough (started AD 43) they guarded each end (north and south) of the Wantsum Channel.
The Isle of Thanet was an island at this time but had no Roman defences. Canterbury was the port the two forts were protecting. The River Stour is the last trace of the channel that was up to two miles wide, and boats could reach Canterbury up to 1450.
The northern end Reculver has been eroded by the sea and Richborough has been left further inland . This has lost its eastern end they both gained a church after the Romans left. Richborough had an amphitheatre nearby, there are sone good ariel views on multimap.
The church inside the walls was started in 669 and was extended in the 12th century when the two towers were added and photos exist showing that they has pointed roofs in 1850. To get an idea of the fort in its hayday take a look at my Portchester castle entry (A13776771) as it is another one of the Saxon shore forts.
The others were as listed in a document of the Roman imperial archives Notitia Dignitatum
Portus Adurni - Portchester Castle
Anderida – Pevensey
Portus Lemanis – Lympne
Dubris – Dover
Rutupiae – Richborough
Regulbium – Reculver
Othona – Bradwell-on-Sea
Gariannonum – Burgh Castle
Branodunum – Brancaster
If this helps let me know if you need more

Cheers bob - I *knew Thanet was an island, at one point in time but it had sort of slipped the memory Reculver's function's a bit clearer to me now.
I see you're one of those historical re-inaction bods - are you connected to the crowd who are connected with Wildwood, out of interest? Currently they're building a Saxon Encampment in the grounds as a show piece.
Can't remember the group#s name, (begins with an A, I think) but they did an reinactment a couple of years' back (Saxon v Viking invasion I think it was. I couldn't see it because my stall was down in the dip - but what I *heard sounded fun, anyway)) for one of the local community Groups, The Saxon Group, down at Hampton.
And they ate all the Hog Roast before I could get to it, the pillagers

Regina Angalorum - that's them!
It does sound great fun, and perhaps when I'm a bit more less poorly (3 ops in 7 weeks - I'm a tad on the convalescent side, protem) I may well get involved
The Regina Angolorum mob are recreating a Saxon Settlement in a place near Canterbury, called Wildwood, which breeds indiginous animal species - things like wild boar, wolves, wild horses, different types of deer... that sort of thing. I'll find you a link in a minute
What was I selling? Well, not goods as such, that day. I was doing Indian Head Massages - I suppose you could say I was selling the prosspect of a headache free day!

What - and lose my hard worn street cred on the Pudding Thread? Aromatherapists are supposed to be serene and tranquil and not cuss blind at bureaucratic ups

I think I'd prefer putting little blades on the grannymobile's wheels, Boudecia style!
