Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact

It's my first day with the Guide and I feel as though I ought to say something profound. The original guide was written (or rather written about) in days long before the WWW. Now its real. Maybe this is a good time for us to look back at all the other science fiction dreams (and nightmares) that came true. A good thing to think about as we choose which visions to build into existence.
'nuff said,
Godling.

Hi!
In a Star Trek NG episode, Captain Picard talks about the Fermat theorem, namely that the
equation x^n + y^n = z^n does'nt have any natural x,y,z solutions if n>2. There Picard tells,
that "until today, no proof for that theorem has been found". As far as I know, STTNG was
placed in the 24th century, 400 years forward in time! But a few years ago (199?), the above
mentioned theorem was actually proved. How sad. Another prediction of SCI-FI becoming
a mere fantasy!

I think 'Godling' was hoping we would be building science fiction UP not dragging it down !
The best I can offer is:
a) We seem to be drifting towards a world very close to Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'... but then that's just human nature working it's way through.... the only way to improve on 'human nature' is to make some corporate decisions as a race.. but we don't have the communication mechanisms available to us to do that yet....
b) Science Fiction is sure to be one of the first sources of 'inspiration' for those companie hoping to make a 'quick buck' out of a new scientific invention so it's bound to come true ! ... I marvel at h2g2.com because as far as I'm aware no-one is going to 'make a quick buck' out of it.... it will become what we make it... that's a weighty legacy...
I hope we get some more contributions soon !
