h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

... I've been lurking about Hootoo for years, since 2002 or something. I see you around often, and always think "there's a frood who really knows where his towel is"...

I really want to get into actually writing entries, and being involved in the Guide. I used to be an ACE, but had to quit when I traveled so much, but the advent of the laptop is about to free me up considerably. Since you are a "old salt" here on the Guide, I was wondering if you had any advice or guidance, or suchlike?

Also, I enjoy reading your page and journal when I happen across it. Thanks for keeping it up... I should follow your example.

Wow - praise indeed.

We have a page called <./>ChallengeH2G2</.> which contains a lot of ideas for entries that no-one's written yet. But it might be worth having a think about something you already know a bit about. Have a look for your home town, or a favourite musical act, film, book, holiday destination. Use the 'browse' option in the menu bar, or the categories on the Front Page to see if we already have an entry. If you do that, you'll probably find a subject you can write an entry about.

Then just write it.

What I mean by that is, don't worry about getting it right, or finding the right structure or the right opening line. Just write it. Because too many people get bogged down with trying to write it well on their first go that they never get past the first line.

Once you've written it all down, then you can go back and look at which order you want things to appear in. Chronologically? By theme? If it looks like it's getting too big, think about focusing on one part of it, and maybe saving the rest for a separate entry.

That's all I can suggest at the moment. You could also pose the question over in the <./>AskH2G2</.> forum though, to see if anyone else has any ideas
