Welcome Future Friends!
It has been many years since I felt compelled to participate in an online community. This one has a reminiscent feel for me and I am hopeful that it is a good fit. My online history begins with eWorld, a chat community run by Apple Computers about 12 years ago. I worked as a Religions and Spiritualities guide discovered the joy of online communication. I loved the freedom it allowed for people to meet and discuss who would never have had the opportunity in the physical world, either because of proximity or socio economic differences. When Apple pulled the plug on eWorld I followed some of the creators to a new community called Talk City. I worked as a chat host, forum leader, special events producer, and standards advisor. I spent 18 hours a day and most of my life energy in building that community. I loved the interaction and the inquisitive minds that were there in the early days. As is often the unfortunate truth, the bigger the community became the less structured and more problematic. With the collapse of the dot.com bubble Talk City became little more than a web portal being passed from hand to hand. At that point I stopped participating in internet discussion instead being, at most, an observer.
Offline my life has grown and aged beautifully. I married a long time friend that I met through internet chat. We have a beautiful little girl that we are extremely proud of. We started a UPS Store together and spend most of our time on work and family. Though there is a healthy portion set aside for gaming. He is a FPS and I am more the RPG/RTS genre. I also love SciFi in any form I can get it. We currently live in the American West though together have managed to live in 6 US states.
I learned of this community many years ago. But as I was involved in other areas I simply made a mental note. A week ago I was using a Firefox extension that allows you to view random sites. I was deposited on the h2g2 main page. It sparked my memory and my interest. I felt this was a community similar to the pure early internet communities. I am anxious to meet other members and become part of this collective.
