Well worth the struggle Abi, I agree with Ashley the first 200 are hord but after that it's a stroll. Unfortuantely I had mine stolen with my rucksack in Warsaw just as I reached the coasting part, and had to wait three weeks to buy a replacemnet copy. So I could finish the thing.
My tip don't go to a high crime area anytime near the 200 page mark.

I'll also agree with Ashley. Once you get into it, the book really takes off with the war and stuff. I even named my daughter (Natalie) after one of the recurring characters (Natalya). 
Seriously, we needed a name and as I was reading this big nasty book I looked up at my beatuiful wife and said 'How about Natalie hon?' The rest is history...
