Freelance Cynic - a job description
Young, free and single. Or alternatively, immature, cheap and unloved. Whatever, it means they don't run the risk once of year of being beaten to death for forgetting their loved one's birthday.
Still, never mind. Cynics may not be well travelled but they're well worn. Their chosen journalistic path of people-spotting and reality-watching is an inexpensive career and also a great excuse to sit around in pubs a lot.
Note for Americans: No, 'pub' does not mean 'bar'. And no, that thing you once saw in Boston that called itself a pub isn't a pub either. A pub is somewhere you go to talk, fool about and do just about anything other than buy the next round of drinks. Experienced pub-goers can make a single pint last days and the important part here is the owner doesn't comment. This is reasonable behaviour. You try that anywhere in the US.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
