Hello pailaway
I've been given your excellent entry to sub-edit. Don't know whether I ought to tell you this or not, but it's my first! (and by the time you get to my age, any *first time* is very exciting)
So, to business.
On first read-through, this sentence:
There are, of course, many others too humorous to mention.
Is the word "humorous" supposed to be "numerous" ? Or is it one of those play-on-words?

Hey, great! Congratulations first timer - hope it's not too much like work.
'too humorous' is definitely an intentional play on words - but thanks for asking because my brain does misfire now and again.
Here's for while your subbing this.

These are very good choices for links. I was most surprised, but impressed nonetheless, by the 'befouled his britches' link - how could I not have seen that one coming? - very apropos for this entry.
Now then, a question for you - have you checked out the link for the New Testament? What do you think - is it too cynical?
Oh, and 'Sweet Jesus, not the begats!' seems inoffensive enough. (Actually, that's a common american phrase - is that phrase also used in UK? I would have thought b'jaysus, or jesus, mary and joseph - wait a minute, those are more particularly Irish aren't they?) Anyhoo - I might recommend the following: 'Sweet Merciful Jesus, not the begats!' It kind of draws it out a little more.
Finally, Flan? I didn't know there was a flan smiley. Will wonders never cease? I must get me some

You have no idea how much cr*p I had to wade through to find that link
I knew there *was* one, I stumbled across it once before, (thankfully didn't land in it)
I think all the links are OK, and the "Sweet Jesus" I okayed with another friend I'm not sure about b'jaysus - so I'm happy to add the "merciful" = 'Sweet Merciful Jesus' and then this can go back to the Editors for their final polish.
Just say
May I say, it's been a pleasure, and thanks for introducing me to this great character
is not the only flinging smiley - I could have ed you or ed you or even *duck* I might do those *next* time if we get *paired up* again, as it were

Tell you what. 'Sweet Jesus, not the begats!' was better - let's return to that, your first suggestion and remove the 'merciful'.
Other than that, I'd say it's got my .
Thanks for subbing this - and also for your diligence in finding that 'befouled his britches' link - you should be very proud.

OK, swtiched back to "Sweet Jesus"
You're very welcomeand of course I'm proud
You can trust me to sniff entries out
It should be "pending" status and in the queue for the Front Page now
Watch out for the email from the Editors

What a week.
So I saw that this entry is in the queue (at the end of a long week, that last word looks very odd - that can't be how it's spelled) like you said, and much improved too. I just don't see how you find the time to write (a gazillion, at last count) entries, offer peer review and now sub-edit. It's all I can do to peer review a few entries a week which is pret-ty puny by comparison.
And I don't see where you get the endurance - like that (very fine) Coca Cola entry that should have been coming into the station at last, but there it was picking up both steam and new passengers I like to died.

If you want to know, h2g2 is my escape from my harrowing real-life.
Honest, it just gets worse.
I don't "work" (as in for a living) so when my son (he has Asperger's Syndrome) is at school, I have time to give to h2g2. That's when I'm not with my parents, who are 88 and 86. My Dad has stomach cancer and was given 6 months to live last December.
I don't have time for a personal life, being single I don't have to spend time away from a partner, it's lonely but I don't have a choice. I can only spread myself so thin..
So, throwing myself into hootoo, plus all the friends I have made here and the support I get from them (virtual, but it's still real to me) is beneficial to me, the feedback I get when someone has enjoyed an entry I've written; or helped with their own, is soothing balm..and then there are the days, like the one when I discovered the BLOB which had been placed on my coming-up Meerkat entry (it's now on my PS) and it's so sweet and gorgeous and it was made for ME ooh, I just wanted to melt.
It's not a gazillion (I like that word) my 71st solo entry is currently in PR, nowhere near Gnomon or Demon Drawer yet - when I got my sub-ed badge I thought I'd slow down on the writing output and help the editors from a different angle, I'm so glad I did 'cos I've read some fabulous entries (done 4 now)
Phew!
OK now you know my life-story I better add you to my friend's list

I'm trying to figure out how to add you to my list of friends - but I can't seem to find the button - I'll keep looking.
I'm sorry to hear about your father - I lost mine last february. It's peculiar, but I feel closer to him now than when he was alive - perhaps because he was not approachable when he was alive and we were not particularly close then. His passing grieved me nonetheless - but I actually see Life, the Universe and Everything as an actual continuum where nothing dies they just move around from place to place.
As for me, I live in New Mexico (about 70 miles east of Roswell - I have not seen any aliens yet but I am constantly on the lookout) with my wife and our cat. (It knows in its heart that it is the best cat in the universe, but we know there are more cats in it and so take the broader view.)
This is a very rural area and I am used to larger cities with universities in them so H2G2 is just great - lots of interesting and smart people (present company definitely included). I have had to visit the dictionary more times since last december than I have in the last 10 decembers.
Now to find that 'add to friends list' button. Where is that dam' thing?

Oh I'm glad you found it
Visit the dictionary - I know that feeling, and now mine's out-of-date! That made me feel I can tell you!
Have you ever thought of becoming a Scout? You already do the job from what I've seen, plus you get the pleasure of choosing a couple of entries for the EG per month.
There are other perks which I can't go into here -
GB
By the way, my journal entries will now pop up in your convo threads so I better watch my p's & q's

Funny you mention scouting - I noticed todays call for volunteers on the front page. In fact, it was the January 1 call to 'make a new year's resolution to peer review an entry a day' that got me started in peer review in the first place - though I'm more like 2 to 3 a week. I'm a little concerned whether I have enough time to scout properly, but I'm certainly willing to volunteer. Now I guess I'll have to go find THAT button.

Scout
You don't have to commit to anything except two picks a month, which you can keep your eye on *during* the month, if you get my drift.
Let me know when you get your badge & I'll drop by and polish it
